Eventually, they were forced to admit that all they could do was retreat. The telekinesis was being matched by the woman's own. Even with that, she was still finding time and skill enough to continue her deflection. The teleporter agent vanished again, seizing his colleagues' hands, and they all returned to base.

Alex and Laurie had returned back to his apartment. The next morning, he began planning how he was to fulfil his earlier promise, and save his future sisters in law. There had to be some method. He just had to find it.

Over the passing days he kept considering different ideas, playing them out in his head. Nothing seemed like it'd work, however. None of his new abilities could guide him. He'd asked Laurie what she knew of what the company's investigation had dug up, but that was little. Eventually, he just returned to the building where he'd made his promise earlier. Maybe he'd find inspiration within.

He arrived outside the building, but just watched it for a moment. Going charging in wouldn't likely help. He'd been lucky when that'd worked the last time. Looking upwards, he could see the burned damage to the labs on the higher floors, still remaining from his earlier attack. They hadn't found time to repair it, or maybe they just hadn't bothered. His eyes were drawn downwards as the doors opened, a young man exiting. He decided to follow him.

Alex wasn't sure why he'd made that decision: there wasn't anything familiar about the man. He didn't look like much. Slightly built, as young as he was or even younger. He did seem confident of himself though, like he did hold some authority. Alex couldn't shake the idea that this man could do something, something to help him.

The man walked a short distance and entered a nearby shop. It was still empty, and he was the only person there except the sales woman. Alex watched unobtrusively from the outside. The girl, still in her teens, was flirting with the guy, or attempting to anyway. It was pretty clear that his responses were only teasing. But then he smiled, and leaned in, and a few seconds after their lips connected the girl began weakening and collapsed.

The method of killing was enough for him to recognise it. After all, he knew Lola, and he knew where she'd been found. The idea was like a spark in his mind, and it clicked. He'd raced to the doorway before he could overthink. Seeing the threat in his expression, the man had slammed the door shut and tried to lock it, but Alex effortlessly crystallised himself and charged through.

Panicked, he tried to run, but Alex quickly trapped his limbs, preventing him from moving. As he tried to open his mouth to speak, Alex blocked that too.
You're not gonna try to run or try to do anything to me. Got it? he asked, his voice harsh. To punctuate the question, the threat, he casually threw his hand out at the counter. A burst of acid flew out, corroding through in seconds.
The man swallowed. He couldn't tear his eyes away from that sight as he nodded. Alex relaxed his control, letting him speak.
What do you want? he implored, fearful.

Alex nodded at that. He just watched the man, with eyes narrowed, silently demanding that he do what he'd just admitted he could. Or else. Jamie looked away, focusing for a moment. He'd only done this reversal once before. But he knew that right now, his safety and his very life depended upon it. He focused, and the girl lying on the ground behind him drew breath again. Then Lola reappeared beside her, drawing breath in the same way. The mirror hanging on the opposite wall blurred, a dim form appearing in it and clearing, before Lee stepped out of it.

Lola got back up to her feet, looking around in confusion for a second, adjusting to changed surroundings. She grinned as she recognised Alex though.

Before they'd left, Lola had flamed Jamie Marks to the New Company's HQ, with a note saying that he was a murderer who'd used his ability to kill multiple times. The three of them between them had intimidated him so much that he wouldn't dare try to fight or run for it til it was too late.

Other than Alex's successes, however, our attempts to counter this gang were going poorly. We couldn't find out much about them - someone was blocking us. And most raids turned into ambushes like the one on McHugh's apartment earlier. It was beginning to become irritating.

When that changed, it came out of nowhere. I hadn't even been at work or on a mission at the time. I'd taken a day off, and I'd gone shopping. I was actually looking for some inspiration for a wedding gift for my brother in law and soon to be sister in law. Suddenly though, I ran into Tonia McHugh again.
