Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
She told herself not to read anything into that, as she threw the second knife aside. It was hard not to, though. What if none of their weapons worked? What if this thing needed a specially forged weapon, or even if nothing in existence could touch it? Was that even possible? The book hadn't said so - but the book hadn't said anything about killing it at all, and maybe this could be why. She tried telling herself these thoughts were paranoia. But that didn't remove them.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
She kept slashing outwards, discarding useless blade after useless blade. It was only because she could do nothing else. It was taking all of her strength, all of the limited skill Blaine had managed to pass on to her in so short a time, to keep the Mesati's poisoned fangs away from her, out of her skin. She knew she'd die if she failed there. She knew those teeth held a poison which'd make her bleed to death. The focus needed to protect herself, and her usual pure dependency on her lost ability, made it impossible for her to try to think up a new strategy here.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
Anya had lost all thought of Min's presence beside her. When the creature had initially barraged into them both, Min had dived aside, rolling sideways until she'd come to a stop beside the wall. She'd then leapt back to her feet and began slashing at its back with her own knives. She saw Anya's failures, the discarded blades. Her own attempts were working as well.

She kept on with her fruitless attack attempts though - they both did. Finally, Min had only one blade left to use. She handled it tightly, glancing down at it, seeing the light from the window gleaming briefly off the metal. One last attempt left. Only one try. This better work, she thought to herself. It better work, because after that she didn't know what else they could do. She took a step forwards. At the same time, the same second, she saw the Mesati lashing out at Anya, pinned beneath it, again. Min's vision seemed to accelerate, and she saw that Anya would fail this time to block it in time. It was almost as if she could see the fangs sinking into her skin before it happened. She threw herself forwards. Desperately, she just tried to get there in time, just interfere, do something, even if she didn't even know if the blade would work or fail as all others had done.

Anya had seen the creature's coming attack. She'd lifted her hands in an attempt to block it; she hadn't known that she was moving too late. She stumbled backwards, and found it collapsing with her. They fell to the floor. For a second, she was sure she could feel the sharp snap of teeth in her flesh, then she realised that she was imagining the pain, and that even though she could feel blood on her skin she wasn't injured. The blood wasn't hers.

With an effort, she shoved the Mesati's body away from herself. Then she pulled herself back to her feet. She noticed the gleaming handle of a blade sticking out of the creature's back, deep enough to have penetrated the spine. She bent down to pull it out.
Yours? she asked Min, handing it over to the other woman. Thanks.
Min just grinned.

Wayward Daughter wrote:The silence which followed that explanation was awkward. Even Min, who didn't know, picked something up from Anya's shuddering reaction and didn't say anything. After a moment, Blaine just climbed out of the car.
Good luck, he whispered to them both before leaving.
You too.
It hadn't taken Blaine long to arrive at the address James Mason had given him. His anxiety, both over the case and over Anya and Min, had led him to pace there. As a result, he had to wait for the older man. He went over the short amount of details he'd been given during the phone call as he waited.

Those details had been few. For some reason, Mason was paranoid and wouldn't discuss much of any case over the phone. He hadn't for all the years Blaine had known him. As a result, when the older man did arrive, the first thing Blaine did was ask what the case really was.

I have a suspicion, the man admitted, his voice gruff. Blaine had suspected that he would have an idea.
What do you know of Epotum? he continued.
Drainers? Blaine replied, startled. I'd learned that they were self-governing.
They say they are, Mason nodded. Bloody parasites. There's a rogue here in the city.

Blaine didn't voice his questions, but that didn't stop them from being asked in his head. Even with a rogue, they were still self-governing. Or they should be. He'd been taught by his father that all drainers were left to other drainers to deal with. He didn't bother arguing the point though.
Where is it? he asked.
All I know is where the victim was found - which is in that building, he pointed.

Again, Blaine didn't bother questioning. He headed immediately towards the indicated building, not looking behind him to check that the older man was following. He didn't need to gather any weaponry since he'd come prepared. He could feel the weight of the knives and two guns - one normally loaded, one with salt rounds.

He reached the doorway and tested it, but wasn't surprised to find that it resisted him. He pushed against it, to no avail. One shot broke the lock. He dove in, gun already raised and aimed, Mason following. The first room was empty though. His eyes swept across the space, checking, then he headed towards the next.

That continued for another three rooms. They swept the building, but the entire place was empty. Not abandoned though. It did look like a home.
What connection did this place have with the victim? Blaine asked, frustrated.
None that I know of, Mason answered. He'd assumed this was the Epotum's home.

Blaine then returned to the first room they'd entered. He began searching it. For what, he wasn't sure, at first - he just didn't know what else to do, there was no sign of the creature's presence. No trail at all. Giving up wasn't an option so he searched.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
He ran through everything, almost on autopilot, but it was a while before he realised he'd found something. At first, he'd just discounted and ignored the calendar. It was pinned up in a corner of one room. He noticed later though that there was an address, a company address listed. He pointed this out to Mason, who suggested the idea that if the Epotum suspected they might have come here, he or she could have fled to that workplace to hide.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
Blaine agreed with that suggestion. It was their best option, anyway. He didn't explain further, just walked back towards the door again and headed outside. It'd be a short walk to the listed address. He found himself subconsciously checking his weapons once again as he paced. A Drainer. He'd never faced one of those before. He knew the drill, of course - no contact, since one touch could be enough to be fatal. Kill from a distance if possible.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
When they arrived at the second address, a simple glance at the exterior showed them that the building was empty, in appearance at least. No lights, no noise, no cars parked outside. Blaine walked to the door, tested it. He wasn't really surprised to find it locked. Mason rolled his eyes at that, told him sharply to just get out of the way, then began picking the lock. It didn't take long before they were able to slip in.

He headed in first, keeping the barrel of his gun steadily aimed. He wasn't buying the silence of this place. Not for a second. They both tried to walk quietly, but Blaine was still sure that their footsteps were thundering. For all he knew, their breathing or even just their heartbeats were enough of a warning. It all depended on what this Epotum had previously taken. And they didn't have a clue what they would be facing.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
There was no sign initially. No sound, no movement, nothing. Then suddenly a blurring shadowy shape flew from an open doorway. It crashed towards Blaine but he'd already began firing. Unfortunately that had little effect. He fell to the ground awkwardly, trying to push the Epotum away, already feeling himself weakening. Mason dragged the creature away and broke its grip on him.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
Blaine glanced briefly at where Mason had hurled the creature away, aimed and released a knife at it. That had as much effect as his earlier bullets. Almost none. The knife bounced off the Epotum's skin and skidded away into a corner. In that time, the creature had regained its feet and was racing towards him again.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
Blaine dove sideways. As a result, the Epotum missed, its fingers scrabbling against the floor instead of getting a grip on him. It hissed in frustration. He dodged a second time as it tried to attack again. Mason was shooting at it from behind but wasn't having much luck either. Eventually, Blaine shouted at him to stop, before one of those ricochetting bullets happened to strike one of them accidentally. Weapons weren't touching this thing. They needed to think.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
Its skin's immune! he shouted. Just in case Mason had missed that concept. Even as he was shouting - and also rapidly dodging yet another attempt to get enough contact to drain him - his thoughts were turning madly. Their weapons couldn't penetrate the skin. That had to be a power it'd gained in the past, like the speed. But something must be capable of hurting it. Could they make it drain itself, somehow? Would that possibly work? How? He didn't even know if the creatures possessed self-immunity.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
Considering that possibility of self-immunity, Blaine forced himself to push that idea away. Trying it wouldn't be worth the risk. Just in case they'd need the element of surprise, with the Epotum still thinking they had nothing but weapons up their sleeves. Now to just actually find something else they were capable of. He wished they had Anya with them - she could just think the Epotum destroyed, or powerless, and it would be. But she wasn't there, so that wish was pointless.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
As he thought, he threw another dagger at the creature, mainly just to do something. Like everything else, that clattered harmlessly away. The Epotum dove at him once again, and his hasty retreat led him out of the office room back into the main corridor. He stepped backwards again, not retreating really, but glancing everywhere for ideas of a weapon.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
The Epotum pursued him without hesitation. He wasn't certain why. Perhaps his blatant attempts to kill it had irritated it, so it wanted to kill him in return. Or perhaps they'd attacked when it was hungry. Whatever the reason, it followed rapidly, so he had to keep backing away. He glimpsed the occasional fire axe, or a window he considered hurtling it through. But if bullets and knife blades didn't work, would an axe blade or broken glass? He doubted it.
