I think it's just a crack in reality. So it can turn up in anything, not just walls and other things which would normally contain cracks. Or maybe it follows her or the Doctor around.

The crack is something to do with the Daleks because its always down to Daleks.
Or the Angels as they have a habbit of sending people through time.
