Shrugging, I just left her go. Typical. In the middle of a case, and she was disappearing out, leaving me to do the research. Which she knew I hated.

I began forcing my way through that, but soon grew annoyed and frustrated. I wasn't getting anywhere. Whatever I searched for, I couldn't find a thing which could do all this. Hissing under my breath, I threw a knife at the opposite wall.

I went to a bar, in the town, ordering a drink, solely because I wanted to get away. Just for a few hours, I reasoned, as the drink turned into two, which changed into three, soon multiplying further.

As the papers fell apart against the wall, I pulled the bottle of whisky out of my case. Unstopping the neck, I drank from the bottle, starting to feel less stressed about this all.

I knew it had gone way too far when I started trying to randomly name cocktails. The bartender was laughing at some of the names I came up with, and I was sort of amazed at some of the names that were actually drinks, as he began to make them

I found my way back to the motel, a while later, far from sober. I pushed the door open, but the second I saw Cate, I began to panic. Dropping to my knees, I checked her pulse, my heart barely beating as I waited for confirmation that she was alive.
