She was only broken out of her own misery by the sound of the phone ringing. Slowly she rose, going to answer it. Her voice was a testimony to that misery as she spoke.
Hello? she asked.
Eve? You don't know where Dad is, do you? Since he said he'd be off on a mission with you lot, but that was ages ago, and he's not back....
The worry was obvious in the girl's tone, and painful. Eve dreaded the news she'd have to break to her, but she knew it'd have to be done.

Lily shook her head reflexively, the phone almost slipping from her grasp. She must have heard that incorrectly, surely? Deep down, she knew though. She'd known since he hadn't returned.... but so many.... she'd lost a father, an effective adoptive father and a possible future sister in law, all in one day. All in one second.

Both of her parents had been only children, her father's parents were deceased and her mother's lived in Australia. She didn't think anyone had been noted to take care of her if something like this happened. In the other timeline, she'd just been taken in by James and Keira, but she doubted that'd happen again. It'd be too much of a reminder of the woman's own loss.

After several hours of pacing and being screamed at, and then given more dirty looks from the nurses after Kim explained that he had just dumped her, he felt unbelievably blissful. The fact that something so small could exist was amazing enough - so beautiful, so precious. He knew it was impossible, but he just wanted to save his son from everything. Whether from breaking his arm or breaking his heart, George didn't care. His son would never feel pain - he wouldn't understand the emotion. He would be the happiest boy in the whole wide world

(That was what people believed at like the start of the last century
It's more important for any kids that the parents get on, and that won't happen if they trap themselves in a loveless marriage)

Almost as soon as Lily had hung up, Eve slumped again, not knowing what to do. Survivor's guilt was gnawing at her, agonisingly. Why had she been the one to live? Why was it that she'd been the one with the ability to save her? What was so special about her? Nothing. There couldn't be any reason. There was nothing special about her; she was just the remnant left over from a spoilt rich girl who wouldn't ever be able to cope on her own.

She buried her face in her hands, unable to face it any longer. Why? Just why? The question kept echoing in her mind. She should have been able to save them, even though it wasn't within the limits of her ability - just somehow. She should have. But she hadn't. Because she was useless for that, wasn't she? Another day had passed before she could bring herself to do what she knew she'd have to. Brusquely she got to her feet and forced herself to get ready, driving to Chicago. She knew where Jo Allson - James' ex - is address would be here, and she knew that his sons would be with their mother currently. She knew she'd have to be the one to break the news to them.

Eve began to contest that weakly, but she soon stopped after realising that the woman would feel it was her place to tell them, and that they'd take the news a little better from their mother. Silently, she just waited. She wasn't trying to listen in, but she still couldn't help but overhear the wordless cry of pain and denial a few minutes later. It brought fresh tears to her eyes, and fresh pain into her heart.

A cold numbness overcame him at that thought, paralysing. She was dead... gone... he could hardly believe it. But he knew it was truth, knew as strongly as if he'd witnessed it with his own eyes. The drawings couldn't and wouldn't lie. She really was gone.

However, no matter how much he hurt right now, he knew that what Danny was suffering must be a million times worse. It had to be. Even worse than when he'd lost Lily, since they hadn't been together then, and they were nowhere near engaged even now. And Rhi..... the poor girl. His heart bled for his baby niece, losing her mother so young. Another thrill of pain ran through him as he remembered that he too had been effectively orphaned by the time he'd been her age, and it'd been Elan who'd helped him then. She always had.
