I'm considering it, if the crowd of people look distracted enough and the device itself isn't obvious

it wont be too bad, as in the film its the noise thats most distracting, and you obviously wont see the noise so youll just see people being distracted.

That'd work. Maybe it'd be more effective, just seeing them getting distracted. It's actually meant to be more of a mental effect than actually making a sound or seeing something to grab their attention.
