One Big Change

His room..... the only word for it was.... strange. He was allowed this... in a school?! I mean, I didn’t understand half of the book titles he had on his wall that consisted of shelves. And his room was five times bigger than mine. It was more like an apartment. There was this.... room, then two other doors excluding the one I was standing in.

One had to lead to his bathroom, and the other... I didn’t know where. It wasn’t until I had scanned the rest of the room, that I realised what it had to be. The second room had to be his bedroom, because there was no bed in here.... unless he had some kind of power that meant he didn’t need to sleep.

I looked at the rest of the room, and wandered around, nervously.

He must have noticed I was looking closely at everything, as he asked, “What? Looking for blood stains or something, Hayley? Please, I’m not as clumsy as you.”

The words scared me. More than anything else he had said. More than his appearance. More than his room itself did. There was something... hidden in them. I couldn’t think of a response.

Once I was done searching through his room, he looked at me, and smirked.

“That’s it?” I asked. It was scary, but for the rule, I had been expecting more.

“Unless you want to go through to my bedroom....” he laughed. There was something else... he really was a mystery.

“I’m.... OK, thanks,” I stuttered, unsure how to understand the offer.

“It’s an open invitation,” he smirked, nodding towards the door. He had settled down onto one of his leather sofas, and shrugged off the jacket. He really did look scary. There was a scar on one of his biceps. I shuddered, and nodded back, walking towards the door.

Should I say thanks or something?

“If you want to,” he answered.

“Ummmm......... what?” I asked, unsubtly. He shook his head, still smiling the bizarre and terrifying smile. I just turned and left. This time, he didn’t follow.

Yeah. I was trying to make it really serious, but i kept laughing, too.

I was already awake when Kelly’s alarm buzzed at 7:30. I was normally up by now... I was never one to lie in. I sat on my bed, unsure what do. What do I wear? What do I do?

Kelly jumped when she saw me, and I tried to smile at her. She seemed to smile back, but simply rolled over, and went back to sleep.

That’s helpful! I thought to myself, unsure what to do. Wait for her? Wake her up? Wander around the school on my own, until someone took pity on me?

I sighed, and went over to my bag. I searched through it, finding the clothes I’d shoved in. Once I had located my red hoodie and another pair of black jeans, I rushed into the bathroom to dress.

When I emerged, I was sort of freaked. How was I ever going to find my way around on my own? I sighed, knowing I had to try, and opened my door, only to reveal a guy about to knock.

“Hey, Hayley,” he greeted, seeming happy to see me, although I was sure it wasn’t me he was looking for.

“Hi, Rob,” I greeted, unsure what to do. Wave? Hug? I just stayed still.

“Kelly still asleep?” he asked, laughing.

“She just... rolled over,” I replied, then bit my tongue. Was I sharing too much?

“No, no, it’s fine. She won’t care. You know your way?”

“Not really...... Where am I meant to go?” I blushed, feeling stupid.

He smiled, once, briefly. “Don’t worry, you’re new. You’re allowed to get lost. Hey, I’ll take ya. Shar’ll be expecting you, no doubt.” I shrugged, and watched him walk a few feet, before he turned, and gestured for me to follow.

I did so, and we walked in almost total silence. I had nothing to say, really.

Once we reached another huge wooden door – was this place just filled with them?! – he went up to it, knocked once, then turned to walk back down the corridor. I moved to follow him, but then the door opened...
