    CHAPTER 8

    January 14th

Carlos and I finish our shift. I go back onto the top deck and I start to shoot sum more cans and bottles again. It has now become a nightly routine, a lot of the ships crew had started rumors about what I did on the deck at night, even Carlos was curious but he had never asked.

Everyone on the cargo ship has their secrets.

I worry more and more about how Kira is, with each day that passes.

I have been shooting cans off of the railing for just over an hour when I hear a noise behind me. I stop shooting the cans and I turn around to see the captain’s first mate looking at me, his eyes wide with shock. He starts to back away from me with his hands raised defensively.

“It’s okay. I’m not going to hurt you.”

The first mate turns and runs toward the sleeping quarters as he shouts for help.

The rest of the crew pours out of the hatch trying to see what the fuss is about. The first mate is talking French really fast to them and I can’t quite make it out but judging by the looks on the rest of the crews faces, it’s not looking good for me.

Suddenly the crew all start grabbing things that they can use for a weapon. Anything they can get from screwdrivers and crowbars to planks of wood and loose pipes.

They start to walk toward me and Carlos steps in front of me, he talks in French to the crew and tries to defend me, saying that I haven’t hurt anyone and that no one on the ship is innocent.

He really is a good friend.

Then the crew rushes us, raising their weapons high. Carlos steps forward and tries to help me fight them off. We fight hard; I’m trying as hard as I can to not use my gift to drill holes into them.

Carlos is taking a severe beating as he fights six armed men off, then one of the men behind him stabs Carlos in the back with a kitchen knife. Carlos falls to his knees as another man hits him in the face with the hook end of a crowbar, the crowbar tears Carlos’ face open as the man pulls it back out.

“Nooooooooooooo!” I scream as I watch my only friend falls to the floor in a crumpled bloody heap.

Before I realize it, I kill twelve men with my gift. The rest of the crew look at their fallen comrades that lie at my feet and then look at me with wonder in their eyes.

Four men stand in front of me; the one in front of the small group is the man that killed Carlos with the crowbar.

I raise both my hands toward him and lower my thumbs, two holes appear in the man’s face. Pieces of skull and brain spray onto the three men stood behind him.

The three men look at each other.

Two of them charge at me, raising their weapons high.

They are both dead before they get too close to me.

The last man stares at me and drops his pipe to the floor as he backs over to the railing with his hands raised. He grabs the railing and jumps over board. I run to the railing and look down into the sea.

The man obviously didn’t realize he was at the rear of the ship, the water is red as the propeller churns at the ocean.

It takes me about twenty minutes to throw the bodies over the side of the ship.

I move up to the upper deck and realize that controlling a boat is a lot harder than I thought, I go back below decks and make myself some food as I rummage through the crews things, looking for anything that I could have a use for as I try to figure out my next move.

I’m still a few days from Miami and I don’t even know how to stop the ship once I’m there.
