It reminded me of that too, when I was writing it. Didn't get the idea from there, though

Chapter 13
Westside, 2470
Feeling lost, she'd returned to that one place she previously felt safe in, that shabby apartment building with one room which used to be her haven in better years. She knew it'd be painful. She knew the memories it contained would likely be too much for her to cope with. But there was nowhere left, and she needed what was left.
Once again her feet walked the familiar pathway without much thought, leaving her mind to wander in memories. She hesitated at the doorway, swallowing nervously. It took more courage than anything she'd ever done to push the door open, and she was looking down as she entered.
There was silence. Even the sounds of the street outside and the adjacent rooms were muted. Her footsteps and her breathing seemed to echo.
Then a voice broke through the air.
"Mother?"
She started up, hearing her son's voice. Their son. It was painfully clear now, echoing in every feature of his face as her eyes ran across him.
"What....what are you doing here?"
Her voice shook as she spoke.
"I.....I had to come. When I found out....about my father..."
"You know?"
"I had to tell him," answered Anya. That was the first time Rún realised the other woman was there. "He deserves to know, Rún."
She nodded numbly, knowing this was true but too weighed down to even think of it. Anya sighed.
"Did Sean even know?"
She already knew the answer. She was sure Sean would have mentioned a son if he'd know about the boy. And she was even surer that Sean couldn't have stood to have his own flesh and blood raised as an Eastside child, so he couldn't have known.
"Why? Why didn't you tell him? It's not like you didn't get a chance..."
"I couldn't...." her voice broke."You know how he'd have reacted, Anya."
"What would he have done?"
Darnell's voice, full of curiosity, broke through their conversation.
"He'd have taken you in himself," Anya answered, seeing that Rún couldn't speak. "Even though it'd be impossible. He was just like that."
"What are you doing here?" she asked at last. "Why did you flee?"
Rún shrugged. Anya pressed the question, and at last she answered.
"I don't really know.....you saw what I did, and I couldn't stay after that....I don't know why I did it though....I just....."
Anya shuddered. She knew well what the consequences of the woman's actions would be if she were caught and found guilty, and her tone was frightening her. It didn't have enough emotion in it. Not enough fear.
"Rún......."
She seemed to visibly start at her name. While Anya was thinking, she'd been absently staring through the window, and when she turned there were fresh tears on her cheeks.
" Rún, what are you going to do now?"
"I don't know...."
However, there was a strange tone to her voice. One which suggested that she was lying, hiding the true answer. Realising this, Anya sighed.
"You can't just give up on everything, Rún."
She received no answer.
"You can't! What about your son? Sean wouldn't want you to..."
"How would you know?!" Rún interrupted furiously, hating that Anya would dare use that approach. Her eyes were livid and her voice was high and shaking.
"I knew him too, Rún," she answered softly.
"Mother....you're frightening me...."
Rún turned to face him, tears upon both their cheeks and her expression softening. Slowly, she reached out to him, drawing him to her. She closed her eyes as she embraced their son.
"I'm sorry. But you have to let me go."

Re: Forbidden - Complete
Brilliant chapter! Very good character portrayal. I kind of wish your chapters were a bit longer though, I sort of get into it and it ends too soon. Still, good stuff anyway!

That's amazing, Low!!!
If she's leaving Darnell, too, how much hope is there of a beach ending!?

Thanks Danny, Pippy. I know, they're shorter than in The Extraordinary, but then the entire story's much shorter too.
Pips. You and your beach ending but if I were to do that, maybe she'd end up going back?

I think the beach ending would be amazing.
It's great, Lowri, and even if you don't put the happily ever after on the beach in, it still will be! (Just not as good. )

Chapter 14
Westside, 2470
Darnell didn't say anything in response, unable to argue against the sheer despair in her tone. She was little more than a stranger to him, and yet she was his mother, and he could see she was broken. Far too broken. Without a word, he stepped back, giving her what she'd asked for. Letting her go.
Soon after that she walked away, leaving, turning her back on her family, her son, the life she'd known and the life she'd loved. Darnell made no move to stop her, and Anya hesitantly followed his lead. Once more the door creaked shut as she closed it, this time truly leaving for the last time.
Again she walked through the cold and dismal streets of Westside, agonised and grieving with her tears flowing freely. Again she felt herself drawn onwards, passing by those sanctuaries of the past in her wake, drawn to her grim present. Again she found herself standing near the dark stone of the gaol walls. She hadn't made a conscious decision to return - she'd simply found herself approaching it, hesitating at the entranceway. At first it was simply to hear his voice, to cherish once more the bittersweet and painful sound of that one single word - "Don't". At first that was all there was to it. She'd step to the threshold only to step back, startled each time and fresh tears spilling at the sound which was searing into her heart. But slowly that changed.
Her emotions darkened, each step back becoming heavier, more reluctant. Each time, she'd wonder what she had to step back for. Her son barely knew her, and he'd let her go. Her future would contain nothing but hiding and living chilled and grieving on the streets of Westside forever haunted. What did she have to live for? The answer was in the silence as she once more stepped away. Nothing. There was nothing. She'd already lost. Nothing but that bittersweet memory she was clinging to here, reduced to a simple 4 letter word.
"Don't."
This time she raised her tearstained face to the frozen air, and took another step.
"Don't."
"I have to. I.....I'm sorry, Sean, I'm sorry, love.....more....more sorry than words....could ever explain. But I have to."
She hesitated once more in the doorway after that second step, barely seeing the guards who had noticed her and were cautiously approaching, blurred through her tears. The voice was silent now, and she felt as if that silence were reproaching her.
"I have to," she implored in a whisper made hoarse by hours of weeping, "I have to. It's the only way I can see you again."
"What are you doing here?" the brutal question snapped across her reveries. She raised her head once more, and the lamplight fell upon her clearly Eastside features. The man stepped back, shocked, confused. It was obvious he was wondering what she would be doing here, and dressed as she was.
"Can I help you, ma'am?" he asked then, his tone this time infinitely more polite.
"Yes...I am...." she hesitated. She knew that giving her name and family name would be enough for him to arrest her and pass out the sentence she desired. But somehow, she couldn't say it. She wasn't that woman anymore, if she ever had been. "I am Rún. I killed my husband, Arann Fiorr, to avenge my lover."
She could see the recognition in his expression - her husband's name was known to the guard, as was his death. She didn't resist as he roughly grabbed her arms and restrained her, or as she was tugged inside.
"Stay with me, Sean," she whispered, slight fear tinting her voice. She knew she'd be going to join him, but she was still afraid, afraid to die and afraid of the unknown. The tone of Sean's voice seemed to change for her then. No longer containing pain and warning, but filled with understanding, welcome and strange warmth.
"I'm here. I'm with you."
And despite all, she knew that was true. With her eyes closed, she could almost sense him there beside her, his presence more tangible than the cold stone wall as she was roughly thrown against it. She didn't need her sight to know where she was - the execution yard. Crimes such as hers earned no trial, no preliminary stay in a cell. Nothing but the fatal justice of a shot to the head. Grimly, she forced herself not to tremble and straightened her spine; after all, this had been her choice. Both crime and confession had been cold and deliberate, stemmed from the same root. Still she did not open her eyes, wanting to see nothing but the memory of Sean's face and the echo of his voice as the shot hit and darkness fell.

Re: Forbidden - Complete
Awesome, awesome... the true brilliance of your writing really came out in that last chapter and you couldn't have ended it better. A brilliant tragedy with a terrible yet fitting conclusion. Really brilliant stuff Lowri.
I dunno if you saw but there is a new chapter up on mine, give it a read when you can, would be much appreciated. Cheers
