In the books, it's more like she felt she owed him and she knew she felt too strongly for him to really want him dead, so when she realised that she not only stood a better chance of survival with him but didn't have to kill him she decided to join up with him. In the book, it's a lot more obvious that she doesn't actually love him and she breaks up with at the end
