Similarly, the first vortex barely missed them. Nathan stepped forwards, creating an air shield even though he was unsure if that'd work, attacking the man with fire. Kings retaliated with a second vortex. That one didn't miss.

Emma's scream was loud and piercing. She watched as Nathan vanished - almost before her eyes. She barely had time to cry before she saw Kings before to advance. No! she shouted. It was impossible, it hadn't happened, it couldn't have happened, it wasn't true.

Emma stayed in the deserted parking lot for nearly an hour, sobbing uncontrollably as she tried to find courage enough to tell Darrien.. to tell anyone. But it was impossible. Nathan couldn't be dead - it couldn't be her fault. Despite all that made it impossible, like the fact that she couldn't deal with it, it seemed to be. Nathan.. was dead? It didn't make sense. He had to be alive.

She found that she'd stayed as she was, curled up and crying, for hours, just grateful that she'd happened to be alone so that she didn't have to explain what was happening. She felt like actually saying the words "Nathan's gone" would break her.
