3 days had passed before James trusted that he could search for Eve. They'd passed before he could even consider the possibility that he'd be trusted enough, that it'd be believeable that he wasn't searching for her if caught. He wouldn't have risked it even then, if not for the knowledge that he'd most likely be able to teleport away before being caught. And for the burning fear over what could have happened to her.

He made his way down to the cell levels, passing through them slowly, searching through each one. Each prisoner stared at him as he passed, and their hard eyes made him shiver. Just like Elan and Dann when they'd been here, he had to fight the urge to release these all, reminding himself that it'd be suicidal, and that it Eve he was searching for. Eve was the one who was important.

Finally, he found her, the slight darkhaired woman sitting desolately in her cell with her back to the glass window. She didn't give any sign of detecting his presence outside. He glanced around, confirming once more that no one was nearby to see, before teleporting into the cell.

Eve! I'm so glad you're ok! Come on, I'll get you out.

The sound of his voice caught her attention and made her turn around. But his joy was so great, he didn't notice the glimmers of something wrong in her expression, the slight vacancy.

She continued to watch him blankly, without any explanation. The sight was agonisingly painful. They'd done this to her.... they'd reduced her to this. And he couldn't do a thing to help her. He could heal his own memory, but he couldn't give her the same protection. He'd already attempted it, at once, and failed.

He shook his head, sinking down to sit on the floor, burying his head in his hands. Eve was still watching him with the caution of a cornered animal. What could he do? Was there anything he could do? He'd barely realised that he'd lost grip of time in his shock and despair.

However, he regained it just in time, hearing the approaching footsteps as another agent turned around the corner. He immediately froze time. Reaching out to Eve, he teleported them both out of the cell, out of the building, careful to ensure he still didn't lose his grip on the frozen time there as they left.

She hadn't healed memory before, but James, Elan and Dann had all been able to identify the ability. Elan raced off upstairs to find her, and brought her downstairs. She grinned toothily at everyone, and at her mother's encouragement she toddled over to Eve.

Elan smiled indulgently as she caught that thought. Eve was watching the girl cautiously and uncomfortably as Rhi approached her, wondering what she was doing. The only reason she didn't back away when she touched her was because she was forcing herself not to, telling herself it'd be irrational to be afraid of a toddler.

After a moment, Rhi moved away, smiling cheerfully and confidently, as if proclaiming that the job was done. The lost cast had vanished from Eve's face also.

Eve? Elan asked. Eve? Do you remember....?

I remember, she answered. But it isn't Eve you're speaking with.

What do you mean?

I'm not Eve. Eve was the one they caught, the one they erased. The one who wouldn't survive them any more than she'd have survived living through the Resistance. I am Keira.
