I'm sorry, she whispered again, before leaving, hastily making her exit. In the knowledge of what Sienna was suffering, even her own grief seemed hidden. Sienna barely registered that she'd left. She didn't say a word, lost in the endless pain crashing down on her. Robert was dead... no, he couldn't be dead... she couldn't have lost him. Except she had. She could feel that she had, she'd felt it from the second she'd returned.

Once he was close to having memorised all the titles on Hamish's bookshelf, Reuben coughed once to signal he was ready for conversation. Hamish did not react, continuing his pacing as if his brother was still not present. You appear very withdrawn, lately. The statement did not lack confidence but the silence breaking seemed odd.

You've been speaking to Graham, observed Hamish, still as emotionless as always.

Reuben was not surprised by his brother's logic and he nodded, even though Hamish faced away from him. There was no need for verbal confirmation of a fact they both knew was true. You fired Thomas, stated Reuben again but this time Hamish did not reply. The state of his apartment made that clear. And you haven't been going to work.

All of my work has been completed, replied Hamish politely. He faced the window so Reuben wouldn't see his smirk at the exasperated sigh he received for that comment.

But you haven't been going! Reuben said, his tone much sharper than before.

Hamish wiped the grin off of his face before he walked back towards his brother, seating himself on the armchair opposite finally. I have completed my work, there was no reason for the disciplinary committee.

You are well aware that you wouldn't have a job any longer if it weren't for me. I am sick to death of insisting "Hamish is a intelligent man".

Hamish coughed. I highly doubt anyone was disputing my intelligence.

A lot of people were commenting how stupid you were to be "letting it all go now", replied Reuben with a slightly smug grin.

She remained stuck in that grief for hours, barely aware of her surroundings any longer. It didn't matter any more. Nothing did... it took her a while to realise that her son was tugging at her arm, and she jumped, startled, when she did notice him.

I'm sorry, he whispered, echoing everyone else's condolences. It wasn't supposed to happen like this.... this isn't what happened.... I don't know where it went wrong....

Slowly, those words sank in, and she asked him what he meant. Falteringly, he then explained what he'd already explained to his father months previously, when she'd first gone missing. How he'd deceived them into believing he was from an alternate future, how he was really from the ongoing one.... or was meant to be, anyway.

It wasn't meant to happen like this, he muttered again, pain mixing with stubborn confusion in his voice. Suddenly he raised his head. The usual confident grin had reappeared on his face.

It didn't happen like this! he repeated.

What do you mean? she growled. What difference does that make?!

It didn't happen like this... it doesn't happen like this. Or it did - until it got changed. That's it! It did happen like this, but I changed it!!

For a desperate second, she just froze, unable to understand what he'd just said. She gaped at her son. The words couldn't pass her ears to reach her brain... she couldn't grasp them, she couldn't grasp the impossible new hope they offered.

I can save Dad, he concluded, grinning proudly now. She shook her head.

No, she corrected. We can save him together.

Tavis quickly agreed to bring her too, and reached out to his mother then they both vanished. Reflexively, she found herself closing her eyes as this happened. When she opened them, they were both in a dark-lit, narrow corridor. She whispered to him to keep hidden, keep behind her, but he was already doing so. There was no sign of Robert, yet, but she could hear her earlier captors' voices from the nearby rooms.

Quietly, she began looking around for him, searching through side corridor after side corridor. She hadn't known before what a maze this place was. And all the time, she kept Tavis carefully behind her - protest against it as he would, he was still a child. He was only here in the first place because she'd needed him to get here, and would need him again for their escape.

Still she kept searching, with every passing minute feeling like it was an hour. That feeling of everything breaking had gone, though, and this gave her hope. She would succeed here... she had to. When she finally found Robert, she felt like her heart would leap right out of her throat in her relief. She raced over to him, throwing her arms around him so tightly she ought to be crushing him, and barely aware of that. Her entire body was now shaking with that relief, and joy.

How....? he began asking, and suddenly she found herself laughing. That relief again. Shortly she explained how she'd escaped originally, faltering as she moved on to describe returning and learning of his death, her voice strengthening again as she explained how she and Tavis had come back to save him.

We'll fight these together, she concluded.

Robert nodded his agreement, hands tensing on the Hunter knives concealed in his pockets. Sienna took a step away. She warned Tavis - yet again - not to get involved, and then within a second she'd transformed, a giant pale brown wolf standing where she had been. Instantly she began running. She pounded into the door on the other end of the corridor and the force of her impact tore it open. Immediately she was in among her earlier captors.

Her teeth caught in the nearest immediately, tearing away, feeling him crumbling. Beside her Robert was fighting too, but she was barely aware of him. Her own fight filled her mind. Attacking on every side with teeth and jaw and claws, barely dodging attacks on her flanks, ever conscious of the potential threat of fatal venom. Ashes and blood pouring everywhere. None of hers, or Robert's, luckily. It seemed like they were winning.

Lost in that fray, she had no idea if it was minutes that was passing, or hours. All she was aware was the next attack, the next dodge. Her teeth meeting through the skin of yet another vampire. Her claws tearing deep enough to draw blood. Always avoiding injury herself, always conscious of that possible poison. She'd come too far to lose now.

She was unaware of how her adrenaline was consuming her in the midst of all of that, but because of it, it took her a while to realise when the fight was finally over. She must have been standing in a circle of bodies and ashes for several moments before it registered. She was slow in lowering her guard. When she did realise, she embarrassedly darted to a side room to shift and redress, then re-emerged. Immediately, she ran towards Robert and threw her arms around him again, clinging just as crushingly tightly as she'd done before. She was finding tears threatening her eyes. The memory of her loss was striking her again, painful even with the knowledge and proof that it was in the past.

That memory kept insisting on pounding into her mind, realising her own stupidity in all of it. If she only hadn't ran before.... if only she hadn't been so idiotic. And not just idiotic in running. She realised now, how pathetic and juvenile her earlier protests had been. If she hadn't been able to save Robert... if she'd ended up losing him forever....

Shaking her head, she tried to push those thoughts away. She hadn't lost him. She shouldn't be dwelling on the possibility. She forced a small smile, which slowly became more real and grew. She found herself acting before she knew it. Taking a small step away, she let go of Robert, but still kept her grip on his hand.

Robert.... ask me again....

He didn't understand her request at first, just standing there watching her quizzically, til she wasn't sure if she wanted to laugh at him or just call him an idiot. She just waited. Slowly, the realisation broke, and she could see this by the change in his expression, a smile crossing his lips before he could move to sink down on one knee.

Sienna, will you marry me? he asked a second time, still with her hands in his.

This time, she didn't hesitate. This time, her hands didn't tremble, and she didn't shake her head, and she didn't have a doubt. She just nodded, once, her face beaming.

I will, she answered simply. She'd been a fool last time.

For a second, she just grinned at him, then she rushed forwards and threw her arms around him. She nearly knocked her fiance to the ground in her excuberance. Her fiance!! Even while thinking the word, she could barely believe it.

I guess we should head back to the palace soon, she commented. Everyone'll be beginning to worry. And we need to tell them....

Still holding on to Robert with one hand, she reached out to Tavis with her other, asking him to take them back to when they'd earlier left from. Some little voice in the back of her head was saying that's what should be done. It probably came from their son's earlier panicky warnings. They vanished as she had done before, disappearing without any sign or trace. Soon after they reappeared, she chuckled. She'd just realised how much she had left to tell her fiance.

She trailed off then, not wanting to clarify that "earlier" had been when she'd appeared before and learned of his death. Instead, she headed towards the house. She didn't glance backwards as she knew Robert would be following. Reaching the nursery, she saw that Kitty was already there, watching over the sleeping baby. Her sister glanced up as the pair entered.

Sienna was about to remark that there was actually more they should be congratulated upon, when she realised that her sister had more to share.

We're both great-aunts by now, she proclaimed, laughing at Sienna's completely stunned expression. I'd forgotten that you wouldn't have a clue. Ethan and Caterina have had children - triplets. One boy and two girls. They got married while you were gone, too.

The triplets are in the next nursery down the hall, if you want to see them.

Sienna nodded, and followed Kitty outwards. Robert decided to stay a while. He wanted to spend a little more time with his newborn son.
