Well, basically, it's a bit like the Butterfly Effect. One little action she did (turning left or right in the car) leads to a cascade of events which would seriously alter time.

Have you heard of alternate worlds, and the theory about how they're created? When she goes back and turns right instead of left, the events are so significant, time is altered enough to create a parallel world. Then she has to go back again, to fix it and return to her own world.

yh ive heard about paralell worlds, omg the butterfly effect, that is a great film... i can just imagine, say if someone wasnt born, the whole world could change

or was it just that, when she met the doctor she did so much that helped the world... but she didnt realise...

Because when she met him, he would have stayed down there that day and he'd have died then, but she talked him into escaping when she did.
