Cate waited in the airport, glancing over at the clocks and the displays every so often, counting down til the flight. 15 minutes.... 14..... 13..... and then he'd be going. Liam would be flying away, to that conference in China, the first one he'd attended without her since they'd been married. But she couldn't fly in her third trimester.

Eventually, she arrived back at the house, unlocked the door, let herself in. Her voice echoed at first in the empty hallway as she called out, then her brother-in-law, Daniel, came over to greet and hug her.

As the evening dragged on, Cate found herself staring more and more at the phone, willing it to ring, but it never did. The hours ticked by in her mind. Surely he'd have landed by now..... even figuring in delays in the flight, he'd be there by now..... he'd have had time for any preliminary meetings and getting to the hotel...... where was he? She knew better than to just believe he'd simply forgotten his promise to call. Liam never did that. Something was wrong, she just knew it.

She flicked on the news just to have something to watch, and immediately the first story was a few disappearances in China. The latest were in Beijing, right were Liam was now.... but they were political prisoners, she reassured herself. Asking for trouble, really, in that country, and nothing to do with him.

She woke eventually in the growing light, finding her limbs stiff after having fallen asleep in her chair still watching. The news was still on, now reporting riots in Beijing. She tried and failed to push away her growing unease. Liam...... was he caught up in it? Somehow, she was certain of that. She tried calling his cell again, to get the same no answer.
