This afternoon, I decide to leave work early, at around 4pm as all the work's done and there are no missions left waiting, plus I'm not in the mood to go train. I fly to the GA, thinking that I'd be there in time to pick the kids up. Tessa and Darrien run over to me grinning as one the second I arrive, and we go on to try to find the rest.

I managed to find Nathan within ten minutes, and that time he'd gotten Lucia too. When I asked him if he knew where his other sisters were, however, he shook his head.
I couldn't find them, he frowned. I could find the rest of their class, but not them. And I tried transporting to them but it didn't work.

My heart stumbled at that news, but I told myself that it'd have to be nothing.... some new way to use reality manipulation to hide them both, or something.... they had to be safe. They just had to be. After all, they'd just been in school!! They were meant to be safe here..... I told Nathan to remain with his siblings when I went to speak with their class teacher, hoping for some explanation.

When I got inside, I soon found the teacher - Miss. Halls, a recent recruit. She explained that they'd gone on a small trip just outside the grounds that morning, but that the twins had been present in returning just like everyone else. Or she'd thought they had been.... another of the students had illusion, though.

I understood what she meant by that, on one level - that the kid could have unknowingly tricked her into thinking that the girls had returned when they hadn't - but the rest of my mind was numb, and I couldn't compute it properly. My girls couldn't be gone! Not again! They were only five, and we'd only just managed to get them back before. And even then, it'd almost cost my eldest son.

Numbly, I returned the kids - the other 4, anyway; I couldn't think of them all as "the kids" when 2 were missing - back home, and I contacted the base, asking them to try locating the twins. The results were quick, but discouraging. They got nothing. A chill ran through me as I heard those words, and I had to cling to hope as I reminded myself there were other ways of getting that result. Various blocking abilities and negation, being hidden in time.... it didn't neccessarily mean that they were dead. They just couldn't be dead. I couldn't face even the possibility of that.

I asked the agent on the other hand to call back if any news came, and he agreed readily. Recognising that tone of voice, I said goodbye and hung up quickly, before he could give any apologies and condolences. I couldn't face any. They meant that things wouldn't work out fine, that this wouldn't just be a tiny little blip, and I couldn't face that thought.
