What are we thinking it is? Min asked, once she'd arrived. He shrugged.

Not sure. There's currently loads of options.

The apartment door was locked, the police having finished searching the scene. Blaine picked it open. They'd search the place themselves before going to the precinct to see if there was any evidence they could use which had been brought in.

Immediately Min began looking around, her eyes scanning every surface closely. Blaine watched her for a second, before forcing himself to snap out of it. He pulled an EMF meter from his jacket pocket. He ran it across the room, but picked up nothing. No ghost then. There was no point checking the other rooms: both victims were known to have vanished from the living area.

Eventually, he shook his head and put the meter away. He joined Min in just looking around. She hadn't found anything though. No traces, no clues. Walking over to one of the windows, he paused.... there was something these....

Are those claw marks? she asked.

I'm not sure, he replied. They were faint. Could be just scratch marks....

Still a struggle, though, she noted. I'm gonna go look outside.

She left the room, going outside, while he continued to peruse.

He scanned the entire room, but wasn't finding anything. He was just about to give up on it, when something caught his eye. It'd been half-hidden beneath one of the sofas before. He knelt down beside it, shining a torch to better illuminate the shadowed dark spot. Gingerly he tapped his finger at it. It looked like ectoplasm, but that didn't make any sense, with no EMF earlier. And it didn't have the same gooey texture either.

Hearing Min's voice shouting at him from the window, he got up.

What is it? he asked.

Not sure. There's a back alley entrance, she gestured at it, and this, too. Looks like a sewer entrance. Or one of those entrances to old subway tunnels, for maintenance.

It's that one! he shouted back, realising. The substance he'd found had been traces of some oil. Probably from the creature lifting the entrance lid.

He asked Min to wait, said he'd be coming down. Then he raced out of the room and down the stairs. Remembering her eagerness in the last case they'd shared, he half-expected her to be gone by the time he reached the back.

You're still here, he commented, a little surprised, when he arrived. She laughed.

You did ask me to wait.

She knelt down, trying to prise the heavy iron lid open, and Blaine joined her. She wished Anya were here. It'd be useful, having someone who could just think the damned thing open.

Is it only vampires you go off the reservation for, then? he asked. She just laughed again.

Eventually, they got the lid off, and Blaine shone his torch down the revealed chute. There was a metallic ladder leading down the darkness.

Here goes, he muttered, glancing over at Min, before beginning to descend. The climb wasn't long. His feet soon hit ground.

Come down! he shouted up at Min. Before she'd joined him, he'd already spotted more of the oil he'd found inside the apartment. This was definitely how the monster had travelled. When he indicated this to Min, she agreed. They began following the trail. Every so often, they found more claw marks too.

They continued to search, cautiously, but there was no sign of finding either the creature or its captives or victims. Just more oil, and more scratches. Blaine was just about to suggest looking elsewhere, though not sure where or how, when they did find something: a heavy gold watch in a pile of flaky dust. He bent down to examine it. Then he pulled out the newspaper clipping they'd got the hunt from. The watch matched the one Tim Cartfield had been pictured wearing.

Those skin scrapings seem familiar, too, she pointed at what he'd assumed was a pile of dust. I think I've seen something like this before... or heard of it...

I have to check something first.

She began heading back the way they'd travelled, and he followed. He asked about the risk of losing the trail here. She replied that, if this was what she thought it was, it wouldn't be hiding in these tunnels currently.

Once they reached the surface, Min headed immediately over to her car. She popped open the trunk and began searching inside, completely ignoring Blaine as he asked what she was looking for. She scanned quickly through several piles of papers before settling on one.

Thought so, she muttered, nodding to herself.

What is it? Blaine asked again. This time she answered.

I think it's an Orahichii.

Min smiled slightly, and just handed the paper over to him. His eyes scanned over the words. It did match what they'd learned, so far. Taking victims in pairs of men and women, shedding flakes of scarred skin, infecting its victims in dark underground surroundings. It didn't say where the creature would hide, though.

You said you knew where it could be, now, though, he prompted. And I can't see anything about that in here.

A friend of mine has ran into one before, and mentioned it. That's how I got the info, she explained. They only use sewers and dark subway tunnels to infect. I think too much light is bad for their poison, or for the new monsters or the eggs they lay in them, or however they infect.

So where will it be otherwise?

The last one was hiding in a park.

The nearest park's ten minutes away, he replied. He headed towards his own car and got in. Then he drove to that park. Min was following. Since she wasn't local, and he'd lived here for a bit longer than she had, she needed him to guide her there.

He got out, walked into the park, then waited. He realised now that he didn't know what they were searching for. All Min had said was "a park". She hadn't given more details, said where exactly the previous one had been hiding or why it dwelt there. So he didn't know where to start. When she caught up to him, she could guess these thought from his face.

She grinned, and told him to follow her. Then she immediately set down the nearest path. She was walking quickly, her eyes scanning around, but dismissing everything she saw. He didn't bother asking her what she was looking for. He suspected she'd find it when it was there.

She slowed down when she saw a wooden shed in the background, and headed towards it. Again, Blaine followed. He guessed now that the creature sheltered in such places. Min tested the door, and found that it opened easily, the lock broken. Inside, it was dark and shadowy. The space was large.

Before his eyes had even adjusted, Blaine aimed his gun at the shadows, but Min shook her head, smiling. That wouldn't work. Orahichii were harder to kill than that. Bullets didn't harm them, more like irritated them. She eased the blade from her belt sheath where she'd hidden it.

Weapon out, she darted at the opposite side of the building. She'd seen a glimmer of movement in the shadows there. Blaine followed, swapping his gun for a knife as he did so. But as she reached her target, she found a heavy weight hurtling into her, making her collapse backwards. She fell into Blaine behind her. She felt the orahichii brushing past her as it fled.

She stumbled, crashing to the floor. Blaine fell too, and she felt more than heard him groan in pain. Concerned, she pulled herself to her feet. For a second she worried that he'd been stabbed by their knives as he fell. She couldn't see any blood though. And the light pouring through the now broken door would make any clear.

Grimacing, he pulled himself back to his feet, and collected the knife and guns which had been shaken away from him when they'd fallen. Min had already raced away.

He pounded down the path after her. With his increased height, he was faster, and he'd soon caught up. There was only one route, one way to go. By the time they both rounded the next corner, they were side by side.

Then they froze.
