    With new hope, he focused his mind, his new ability, continuing to will more and more new life into her. Soon, he was seeing the knife wound healing, and colour was returning to her cheeks. She took in one deep, shuddering breath.

    What...? How...? I.....

    Suddenly she turned to face him, seeing him there for the first time.

    Robert? What happened?

    He grimaced.

    You got killed.... but I got a new ability, and revived you.

    You.... you revived me?! I gasped, shocked. I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't think clearly enough to thank him, but he didn't seem to mind, at all. He was just grinning. He was pleased to have succeeded, and that was pouring out of him.

    Wait.... I hesitated. How did I....? I.... I was talking with.... Luke... and then....

    I winced, as the memories flooded back into my head, almost as if I could feel that knife protruding into my body again, feel the coldness and the wrongness, the pain. It wasn't physical. Not this time. Just a sheer emotional onslaught. He'd killed me... Luke, Luke had really killed me. In cold blood. He'd killed me........ And I still loved him.

    What's wrong? Robert asked sharply, noticing my suddenly pained expression. I shrugged.

    Nothing, I lied. Just delayed shock, I guess.... but you said you'd gotten another ability? How?!

    Grinning almost proudly, he explained how he'd broken into their camp and gotten himself a new one.

    As he spoke, however, the grin faded, sobriety entering his tone as he recalled how Victoria'd died to enable him to do this. On the other hand, my own grin grew and grew.

    What is it? he asked once he'd finished. His tone was almost snapping.

    Immediately, I could see his emotions changing, to hope and disbelief that he hadn't realised this himself. He raced back out, to his car, and returned cradling her body. It looked a little awkward, how he was trying to hide from any neighbour's prying eyes. I laughed a little at the sight.

    I hope it works, I whispered, despite myself. I didn't know her at all, but I knew she'd saved me as much as he had. I watched, waiting.

    Where am I? she asked, her voice filled with confusion. What... what happened?

    How come? Robert asked, at the exact same moment as I questioned what had killed her in the first place. She hesitated. It wasn't reluctant, though, more like weighing her answer.

    You know one of them can force people to do as he says, right? It was in my previous information, we both nodded at that. It's simple, really - him. A recent new precaution. He persuades us all that we'd die before betraying their deepest secrets, including things like locations.

    It really is, Robert agreed, nodding. But as to what you do now - why don't you join us? Fight them openly?

    I guess I could, she smiled, seeming more relieved. Her anxiety was now almost washing away from her, slowly yet surely. Everything seemed fixed, and that surety was infectious. I couldn't worry any more about Crescent having possibly blown my identity too, or my lingering emotions for Luke.
