Since it was only 7pm, Cassidy wasn't too worried about Alex not being there - he knew that his mother'd kill him if he didn't show up eventually. Whilst moving around the crowds of people, she spotted Zach, who grinned at her and made a beeline towards her. Eager to avoid any social contact with him at all, she turned and bumped into a small blonde girl. Sorry, Cassidy apologised.
No problem, said the girl with a smile. I'm Izzy, by the way.
Nice to meet you. I'm Cassidy, Alex's girlfriend, she explained and the two shook hands. Cassidy looked over her shoulder for Zach, seeing he had been distracted by chatting up another blonde girl Cassidy didn't recognise.
Izzy smiled at her. I'd say something polite and try and tell a funny story about him, but I haven't spoken to Alex since I was - what? Two? And since I don't remember much about him, I can't..
You're an old family friend? guessed Cassidy and Izzy chuckled politely.
Yeah.. We moved to London when I was two, though - that's where the accent comes from. I'm only visiting - came with my parents to visit my brother.

He lives here? asked Cassidy and Izzy nodded
Yeah. He got a job out here last year and up and left, she chuckled. Izzy craned her neck to try and spot him in the crowd. I'd point him out, but I can't see him. Last I saw, he was inside talking to Alex..
Cassidy blinked a few times before replying. Alex is here? she questioned, her brow furrowing.
I thought it was Alex - tall, brown hair? Guess it could have Jacob, never could tell those two apart.. but no. It was Alex, I heard George say his name.
Cassidy didn't smile but nodded, shrugging off the information. She hadn't seen him, but then again, she hadn't been waiting vigilantly for him to get here. Izzy wondered off to check on her sister, apparently worried that she was talking to Zach, whilst Cassidy thought - she had expected Alex to at least greet her when he arrived..

She tried to ignore it and put the thought that her boyfriend was apparently ignoring her to the back of her mind, but she found herself getting closer and closer to the house. She shrugged to herself, thinking it couldn't do any harm to go and find him. He wasn't in the lobby, meaning he was probably upstairs - it would make sense, after all.. He had been at work all day, Alex had probably only gone to get changed, reasoned Cassidy as she climbed the stairs. She had genuinely no warning of what was to come when she opened the door to their bedroom..

Cassidy took several seconds to truly understand the situation - her eyes couldn't comprehend the picture they saw. Alex was completely undressed, straddling a blonde man, their bodies intertwined. When she opened the door, she disrupted them, both turning to stare at her. The blonde man looked completely embarrassed, flushing bright red and immediately trying to conceal his naked body with a bed sheet. Alex, on the other hand, scrambled for his clothes, tripping over himself in his urge to run after Cassidy as she fled the room

(Ouch... I guess every other time it was him confessing and not her catching them?)

George awkwardly trailed after them, Cassidy only getting as far as the end of the corridor before stopping. Alex pulled on his t-shirt before he began speaking. I'm so sorry, Cassie, he whispered. Cassidy flinched away when he tried to touch her shoulder to comfort her.
The tears fled down her cheeks as she managed to look up from her knees. You and him, she began, flicking her gaze from Alex to George if only for a second. Is this the.. only time?
No, replied Alex. His words sounded blunt, despite his attempt to make them soft and gentle. I'm sorry..
How long? she demanded, her request a mere murmur.
Alex chewed his lip for a few seconds, but he didn't need to look at George to know that he had to tell the truth. It would mean nothing but more pain if he lied. Five weeks.. He came into the garage - his car was broken and.. I don't know, Cassie. It just happened.. I'm so sorry.
Stop apologising! shouted Cassidy. If you were that sorry, you'd have stopped..
Alex felt tears in his own eyes as he began to formulate his response. He crouched down so he was at eye level with the crying girl he had once believed he loved. I am sorry - maybe not about George.. but that this hurts you. It was cowardly to hide it from you.. I'm-I am sorry. But I-I love George.

Cassidy was frozen, although she was uncertain if from pain or shock.. He was in love.. with someone else. You don't love me, do you? she whispered, her words oddly crisp considering her tears.
I wish I did, he replied, although he wasn't even sure if he meant that. As Cassidy looked back at the ground, George looked at Alex. Alex could read the guilt on George's face and vice versa, but both knew neither could do anything to change it.
Cassidy sat there for several seconds more before she began to think more deeply - Alex had cheated on her.. she had forgiven him - it had taken seeing him cheat, hearing him declare his love for someone else to make it clear.. and even then, she was too weak to say it was over. Cassidy didn't even hate Alex, not even more.. she hated only herself. She got up to run, to leave before anything else could happen. Of course, once she was downstairs, she was in amidst a crowd of people, colliding into at least five or six different people before she found an exit.

By the time Alex made it outside, she had disappeared into the night - and so had their car. Although unsurprised, he slunk back into the house. A part of him wanted nothing more than to go back upstairs to George but the rest of him was too filled with self-hatred, self-loathing, to even consider it. It was true, he loved George, he wanted to be with George more than anything.. but in these circumstances? The gossip spread through the party like wildfire, meaning Alex didn't even need to officially come out. Apart from several ignorant comments from Zach, people left him alone.

That's the last one, hun, promised Juliet, refilling Cassidy's glass of Jack. My boss'd have my ass if he knew how much I'd serve you.
Cassidy's eyes barely managed to focus on the amber liquid in the bottom of her glass and she stared stupidly at it for a while. She had never seen the allure of alcohol before, but now, she couldn't wait to throw another glass back and feel the burn in her throat and chest. Not really his problem.
Juliet shrugged in disagreement as she began to run a cloth over the bar. She pulled the basket of pretzels down from the other end of the bar and slid the over to Cassidy. Eat, she commanded. I don't want to be the one cleaning the vomit off the floor in the morning.
There was a silence between as Juliet began to feel guilty for having served the girl, watching Cassidy's third attempt to get the pretzels before she finally succeeded. Juliet watched her, in an almost motherly manner.
You know, whatever he did? It's not worth this.
She looked up to face Juliet, her expression solemn. Yes, it is.
How does that figure? wondered Juliet, who had always had the firm belief that if someone else ended the relationship, it was their baggage to deal with, not hers.
He doesn't love me anymore. Cassidy wanted to clamp her mouth shut, but apparently the alcohol had had more of an effect than she had realised. I'm not sure he was ever in love with me.

What, Alex? The quiet one? sighed Juliet I'm sure he loves you - maybe not in the way you love him. There's loads of types of love.. It's better to find out which before you invest too much.
Cassidy's words were slurred. I've already invested too much! she shouted. She couldn't focus and glared at the now empty glass in her hand accusingly. She had always hated alcohol.
Oh really? So you've already signed the mortgage and had a few kids..
You are belittling my feelings, commented Cassidy, the first words she had spoken with true clarity since her arrival.
No, I'd never. Juliet's face transformed into a motherly frown as she watched Cassidy trying to drink more from the empty glass. I'm just saying that this'll all look a little different in three months when you've not been drinking like a fish for the past couple of hours..
Cassidy snorted and slurred her poorly worded response but noticed Juliet was no longer listening to her. Her eyes were locked on something - someone - over Cassidy's shoulder. She was just sober enough to notice although she did throw herself off balance when she turned to see Braedon. Once steadying herself - with a lot of help from the bar's sticky surface - Cassidy gazed at the bottom of her glass again, praying it would refill.
Go away, Braedon.
Braedon ignored her comment, just glancing at Juliet and throwing the girl the slightest of smiles. A beer, please.
Cassidy looked down at the surface of the bar, refusing to look at the man occupying the bar stool next to hers. Her drunken thoughts slowly sorted through the situation to work out that Juliet had called Braedon. Why was no one ever on her side?

Why did Alex send you? inquired Cassidy, her gaze still refusing to meet Braedon's. Now she was watching as Juliet moved down the bar still wiping it.
Braedon smiled and began pulling at the label on his beer bottle. Nope.
Can I have another? asked Cassidy, pushing the glass towards Juliet's side of the bar. Juliet looked at Braedon expectantly and Cassidy noticed he shook his head.
Finally, Cassidy turned to face Braedon, incredibly pissed now. Her rage tempered, though, and also collapsed off her seat. Braedon only just managed to catch her, but this only enraged Cassidy further.
If I want another drink, I'll get another drink, stated Cassidy, her words lost in the slur.
Braedon offered a slight chuckle but there was no amusement in his face. Looks like you've already had too many.
You should tell Alex that he shouldn't send his broth-
He didn't send me, retorted Braedon He didn't know where to look. You've only been here a couple of weeks, so you could only have gone to that church or the garden.. Didn't seem like the time for praying.

They could get married in the church, commented Cassidy, her words almost as mumbled as her thoughts. It's close to your parents - the stained glass windows would look great in the pictures.
Son of a bitch, breathed Braedon, the words barely a whisper. No one's getting married. Alex feels so bad right now, I bet you could walk him down the aisle yourself if you wanted.
She dismissed the idea with a snort. He doesn't want to marry me. He never has done.
Alex has no idea what he wants.
Cassidy dismissed that as well, her words too mumbled to make out, but her statement was along the lines of Alex never wanting her. There was a silence that followed Did Alex ever date any men, when he was here?
Alex's never dated - he had a girlfriend in high school, but that only lasted a few weeks. He never told us, mentioned Braedon, deciding to hold back on mentioning Zach's long running theory on Alex's sexuality.
She was blonde, wasn't she? slurred Cassidy, somehow the hair colour being vitally important.
Braedon shrugged, unsure for a second. Yeah.

George is a guy, mumbled Cassidy, her thoughts else where. Shortly afterwards, she finished the sentence solemnly, as if she had juust finished a great equation. And blonde. Very blonde.
Damn it, Cas. He didn't smile as he put his hand on Cassidy's shoulder. Just because he likes guys doesn't mean he doesn't like you too. He could bi or something.
Cassidy didn't reply, once again tipping back the empty glass to try and find some more jack I'd have preferred he cheated on me with women - does that make sense?
Nothing you've been saying makes sense. But that tends to happen with Jack.
Braedon tipped back his beer, finishing the last swigs before placing it down on the counter. He wrapped an arm around Cassidy's waist and helps her stagger to her feet. She slumps against him as he begins walking her to the door.
Her eyes focused on Braedon's chin, on the stubble starting to show. Without thought, she reached out and poked the cheek, stroking the stubble almost with interest. What's so great about blondes? laments Cassidy, turning to try and face Braedon, resulting in him having to re-adjust his grip. Do you like blondes?
I used to think I did, replied Braedon, toying with his answer. When I was younger.. But no. I like brunettes. With dark brown eyes.

Cassidy doesn't reply, trying to keep her eyes open was taking all of her concentration. It was only when she saw the black blobs in her vision that she realised how much she had had to drink. She stumbled another time, this time hitting her ankle against the end of the bar and Braedon yet again re-adjusted his grip on her.
Juliet, keep an eye on her car, will you? muttered Braedon as he walked past his friend.
Juliet frowned, staring at them - at Braedon's arm still wrapped around her waist. Not like this, Braedon.
I know that! snapped Braedon, irritably. And I'm not. Just watch her fucking car and I'll be back later to get it.
Do you want me to call Alex? she inquired, letting the point drop, but Braedon noticed that her eyes were still focused on his arm.
Braedon shook his head, beginning to start walking again. No, I'll handle it. Thanks, Ju.
He manages to get Cassidy out of the building without further injury, propping the girl against his car as he went to unlock it and open the passenger door for her. Cassidy was distracted from her task of standing up when she noticed her Prius. That's my car! she announced, and made a valiant effort to walk over to it before tripping over thin air. If she hadn't managed to get a grasp of the car's wing mirror, she would have ended up with bruises along her shins.
We're going in my car, Braedon explained gently and helped her get into the passenger seat.
He leant across to buckle Cassidy's seatbelt for her and before he could safely extract himself from the car, Cassidy plunges forward and presses her face against his neck. She comments on the smell, an odd mixture of beer, leather and some cheap aftershave.
Braedon moved fluidly from one side of the car to the other and before Cassidy has finished her sentence they are pulling out of the car park. You're very attractive, comments Cassidy, blandly. Braedon freezes momentarily. So's Sam. All of the Grays are attractive. Even the other Grays with the funny Italian names. Braedon clicked his seat belt in as he hits the gas and lets the car glide away from the bar. So's George, she sighs, forlornly.
So are you, he replied and Cassidy tried to work out why he seemed so angry. The car's moving along the empty roads slickly and Braedon rolls down the window on the passenger side.
Rule of the road, he said tersely. If you need to puke, roll down a window. Heartbroken or not, you don't throw-up in my baby.
