Where is it? he asked. She reeled off an address, but he noted that it wasn't precise. She just said that she'd meet him there.

He drove to the location, and found her waiting. She then explained that she was looking for some precise markers: a sign with red lettering, a broken window pane. He mentioned that these were strange ways of finding something.

I got it from a vision, she explained. The demon hasn't attacked anyone yet, that I know of.

They continued to search, until Bethany finally indicated that she'd found the place she'd seen in her vision.

It's in there, she pointed. He looked up with her.

There's only one entrance, round the corner, so you should take that, she continued.

Just me? Why? How are you getting in?

She smiled, and nodded at the window again.

By the power and heritage of my birth, grant me the strength to defy the pull of the earth, she muttered. She'd began rising into the air before he left.

Shaking his head slightly at that, he rounded the corner. He found the door she'd mentioned, open only the slightest amount. He approached it. Pointing the barrel of his pistol inside, he scanned the area, but there was no movement, no sign of life. He entered cautiously. He was moving slowly, trying not to make a sound. He didn't want to warn this creature, this demon.

He moved deeper into the building, cautiously checking every room as he passed. All were empty though. No sign of their target. No sign of Bethany, either. As if he was entirely alone in the world. Reaching the end of that corridor, he entered one of the rooms, passing through to the door at its opposite end. The light from the entrance-way didn't reach this far, and he was struggling slightly to see. That darkness worsened the further in he got.

Before long, that darkness was so complete that he couldn't see a thing. Mentally he chewed himself out for not thinking of bringing a flashlight. But thinking that didn't change anything, so he pushed the thought away. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the sounds of loud, too-close gunfire began flooding the air. They were so close they seemed on top of him. He dove to the ground, and was sure he felt a bullet brushing past where his head had been a second ago.

Awkwardly he began crawling forwards, trying desperately to make out any kind of target. A second later, he realised how much in vain that was. His hand had moved to the holster at his waist, only to find it missing. He was weaponless. How was that possible? Every fibre in his being was screaming that this was the worst situation ever to be unarmed, helpless. Here, it'd kill him. He was going to die.

Bethany had levitated herself to the second story window, and had found that its weak boarding gave in at slight pressure. She pushed inwards, caught it and lowered it to the floor making little noise. Then she eased herself in. She found the lighting as poor as Brenner had, the only illumination coming from behind her, but she whispered a short spell which gave light to only her. Then she proceeded. In a way, she was trying to prepare herself for the demon's attack, knowing that she would have her fears reflected back on her when it noticed her, but in another way, she could never be prepared.

She moved through the building cautiously yet quickly, experienced eyes scanning for the demon. It was nowhere in sight. But she wasn't really expecting it to be clearly visible, either. The first sign would be the first attack. Her entire body was tensed for that, her right hand already raised to create her first blast and release it.

She searched the top floor quickly, only confirming that the fear demon wasn't there. She'd suspected as much. The visions had made it look like she'd find it on the lower floor. Locating the staircase, she moved downwards and continued to look. It was pretty much the same. Room after empty dusty room, no sign of anything.

As she entered the last room, however, a shadow at its opposite end caught her eye. She approached it slowly. Her hand was raised for an attack, but it fell as she got nearer. That shadow.... was the outline of a body, surely.... she found that she was practically running the rest of the distance. She knelt down beside him, raised Brenner up. Despite herself, she began attempting to heal. But he was already cold....

She knew then that the healing would fail. At least, she knew that intellectually. She'd tried enough times throughout her life. But she still tried, over and over. She couldn't do anything else. After all, this was her fault. She'd known that she shouldn't have let him come with her. She should have refused him.

For a long time, she just knelt there, trying the impossible over and over. It'd been a while since she'd refused her own limits like this. She'd long ago learned that she couldn't revive, but this was far more personal than any victim she didn't get to in time. She'd brought him here. She'd thought she could protect him, but she'd been wrong. She'd even suggested the idiotic idea of separating, leaving him vulnerable!

Her guilt wracked her as she stayed there, unmoving. It filled her mind, overwhelming every thought, preventing her from focusing on anything else. Brenner was dead. She'd gotten Brenner killed. If only she had been strong enough to resist, strong enough to remain silent when she'd first met him.

She hadn't noticed it, but she'd fallen from her attempts at reviving him, collapsing into these spinning accusations of thoughts. Then suddenly a voice startled her, shaking her out of her dazed state.

Bethany?

She looked around madly. No one there. Next, her gaze snapped back down to Brenner. Still unmoving. His eyes still cold and empty.

Bethany? Can you hear me?

At first, that thought had paralysed him. He'd just stopped there, frozen, unable to even think. Slowly though the realisation began trickling through that this scenario didn't make sense. He'd gotten away from this. He'd come home. Joined the Bureau, years ago, then met Bethany and learned the truth of the real monsters here. They'd been hunting....

Bethany? he called out, hesitantly. There was no response, no noise but the continued gunfire.

He clung to that thought though, that idea that something was wrong. They had been hunting. A demon. Something Bethany had seen in a vision. And all of this couldn't be true, because it didn't make sense. Everything he was seeing, hearing, sensing. Slowly, he raised his head. Immediately a gunshot rang, and he had to force himself not to duck. It rushed straight at him... and nothing happened. Nothing. He moved forwards. He reached to his holster, again finding it empty. But he wouldn't have come unarmed. He raised his arm, forced himself to believe that he was aiming his gun now, even if he couldn't see it or feel it. Where would this creature be? In the direction of the enemy fire? He fired.

Almost as soon as the bullet had left the barrel, the illusion faltered. The darkness flickered, the noises stopped, then it all fell apart. He could see the figure he'd hit. It fell backwards as his shot struck, expression incredulous, and in the same second it was ablaze.

As he turned, he saw Bethany standing there with her arm still outstretched, and he understood what must have happened. She'd broken free of the fear illusions too, and had attacked at the same moment as him. Her entire expression was lit up with relief as she saw him. She raced over, throwing her arms around him for a moment before letting go.

I thought I'd lost you, she whispered. He chuckled.

No, I said I'd be helping you, and you're not getting out of that easily.

She laughed at that, forced at first but slowly relaxing. Then she smiled.

I guess I should have known it was the demon's effects, she admitted.

Isn't it meant to be real? I only broke through eventually because it didn't make full sense.

For a second, she wanted to ask him what he'd seen, but then she reconsidered. There'd been a fleeting haunted look to his face there. She decided to let those ghosts lie.

There was so much on every possible thing, so many conflicting theories and different sets of advice, and he didn't know which to trust. He didn't know what was real, and what was just fiction or fantasy.

Jamie spent the rest of the week in much the same way. Just endless researching. He didn't know what was real and what wasn't, but he made notes of it all, just in case. He was determined not to get caught unawares ever again.

Lost in his research attempts as the weekend drew closer, he'd almost forgotten that Sam was due home. He only remembered when he heard her keys scraping in the lock. Quickly, he turned the monitor off, then headed to the door to greet her. She smiled as she walked in, asking how his week had been. Her eyes were filled with joy. Then his emotions turned to horror. Those eyes turned black, pitch black. She flickered.

No, not you! he whispered, horrified. He took an involuntary step backwards. She just looked confused. Not you, anyone but you...

Jamie? she questioned. What's wrong?

She took a step towards him, reaching out, but again he moved away. He was shaking his head as if denying it could change things. Why did it have to be her?! Why?! She was still looking at him with that uncomprehending expression, but her entire face was inhuman. Black eyes, glimmering silver skin, white hair floating. And somehow, still the same face too. That hurt.
