Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
Blaine agreed with that suggestion. It was their best option, anyway. He didn't explain further, just walked back towards the door again and headed outside. It'd be a short walk to the listed address. He found himself subconsciously checking his weapons once again as he paced. A Drainer. He'd never faced one of those before. He knew the drill, of course - no contact, since one touch could be enough to be fatal. Kill from a distance if possible.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
When they arrived at the second address, a simple glance at the exterior showed them that the building was empty, in appearance at least. No lights, no noise, no cars parked outside. Blaine walked to the door, tested it. He wasn't really surprised to find it locked. Mason rolled his eyes at that, told him sharply to just get out of the way, then began picking the lock. It didn't take long before they were able to slip in.

He headed in first, keeping the barrel of his gun steadily aimed. He wasn't buying the silence of this place. Not for a second. They both tried to walk quietly, but Blaine was still sure that their footsteps were thundering. For all he knew, their breathing or even just their heartbeats were enough of a warning. It all depended on what this Epotum had previously taken. And they didn't have a clue what they would be facing.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
There was no sign initially. No sound, no movement, nothing. Then suddenly a blurring shadowy shape flew from an open doorway. It crashed towards Blaine but he'd already began firing. Unfortunately that had little effect. He fell to the ground awkwardly, trying to push the Epotum away, already feeling himself weakening. Mason dragged the creature away and broke its grip on him.

Blaine glanced briefly at where Mason had hurled the creature away, aimed and released a knife at it. That had as much effect as his earlier bullets. Almost none. The knife bounced off the Epotum's skin and skidded away into a corner. In that time, the creature had regained its feet and was racing towards him again.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
Blaine dove sideways. As a result, the Epotum missed, its fingers scrabbling against the floor instead of getting a grip on him. It hissed in frustration. He dodged a second time as it tried to attack again. Mason was shooting at it from behind but wasn't having much luck either. Eventually, Blaine shouted at him to stop, before one of those ricochetting bullets happened to strike one of them accidentally. Weapons weren't touching this thing. They needed to think.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
Its skin's immune! he shouted. Just in case Mason had missed that concept. Even as he was shouting - and also rapidly dodging yet another attempt to get enough contact to drain him - his thoughts were turning madly. Their weapons couldn't penetrate the skin. That had to be a power it'd gained in the past, like the speed. But something must be capable of hurting it. Could they make it drain itself, somehow? Would that possibly work? How? He didn't even know if the creatures possessed self-immunity.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
Considering that possibility of self-immunity, Blaine forced himself to push that idea away. Trying it wouldn't be worth the risk. Just in case they'd need the element of surprise, with the Epotum still thinking they had nothing but weapons up their sleeves. Now to just actually find something else they were capable of. He wished they had Anya with them - she could just think the Epotum destroyed, or powerless, and it would be. But she wasn't there, so that wish was pointless.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
As he thought, he threw another dagger at the creature, mainly just to do something. Like everything else, that clattered harmlessly away. The Epotum dove at him once again, and his hasty retreat led him out of the office room back into the main corridor. He stepped backwards again, not retreating really, but glancing everywhere for ideas of a weapon.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
The Epotum pursued him without hesitation. He wasn't certain why. Perhaps his blatant attempts to kill it had irritated it, so it wanted to kill him in return. Or perhaps they'd attacked when it was hungry. Whatever the reason, it followed rapidly, so he had to keep backing away. He glimpsed the occasional fire axe, or a window he considered hurtling it through. But if bullets and knife blades didn't work, would an axe blade or broken glass? He doubted it.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
He didn't realise it, but the creature was playing with him now. It hadn't used its blurring speed for a while. Not since the initial attack. And there was a reason for that, a reason neither Blaine nor Mason were aware of. They would soon discover though. There was only one exit from this building, the fire exit destroyed in a recent storm and not replaced - and that one exit was in the opposite direction to how Blaine was fleeing.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
Blaine ran forwards, half-stumbling as he turned a corner. Most of the doors he'd passed had been closed and he couldn't afford the time to test them, the risk they'd be locked. The Epotum was right in his shadow. He was barely aware of Mason still pursuing behind it. He hurled himself around another corner and then he really did stumble. He could see. The corridor didn't go much further. It just died.

Still, he tore forwards until he'd reached the very end. Only then did he turn around to face the creature. It was smiling now, almost mockingly, and still moving slowly towards him. He dropped his gun and moved to draw the one blade he had remaining. It wouldn't have much effect, he suspected. But he felt that he just had to do something. The Epotum closed in on him. It was by now seconds from getting a grasp on him, on beginning its fatal hold.

Seconds later, Mason had grabbed hold of it from the back, grasping roughly at the nape of its neck.
What are you doing?! Blaine exclaimed, shocked. Surely that'd risk giving it the touch it needed....

He stepped forwards instinctively, believing he'd need to react in order to protect Mason from that draining. Mason just hurled the creature away though. It hurtled sideways, crashing into the wall. Into a panel on the wall. The next thing he knew, Blaine had to throw his arms up hastily over his face, protecting himself as flashes of white sparks flew upwards in all directions.

What did you do? Blaine asked. Those sparks were still flying, but they'd decreased. He slowly lowered his hands and his guard.
Looking at the panel again, he could now see a tangle of wires partly revealed. The rest were hidden by the Epotum's body.
Did you electrocute it?
Grinning, Mason nodded.
I thought it was worth a shot.

Blaine laughed awkwardly at that, half out of nerves and half out of relief. He glanced around. There was far too much chaos here to even think of trying to clear or cover it up. Watching Mason, he could tell that the older man was thinking the same. Instead they just left. He returned back to his apartment on the top floor of their warehouse headquarters.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
He found the hint of a new case the next morning. He tried contacting his sister, but at that moment he got a message from her saying she'd discovered her own and gone to check it out alone. He shrugged. Anya could deal with her own work, she'd done it before, she was more potent than him and Min put together. Forgetting the idea of bringing Anya in to this one, he just contacted Min instead.

She agreed immediately to the mission, sounding almost eager for it. There was a definite hint of anticipation in her voice. Blaine gave her the address and said he'd meet her at the site. Then he left their headquarters and drove there.

He parked outside the apartment block and got out, walking into the building. He had to take the stairs as the elevator had an out of order sign. He'd agreed to meet Min outside the apartment. Both missing victims had vanished from the same place. Lucy Moore had been grabbed from her home, and three days later the second, Tim Cartfield, had gone missing while clearing through some of her stuff.

What are we thinking it is? Min asked, once she'd arrived. He shrugged.
Not sure. There's currently loads of options.
The apartment door was locked, the police having finished searching the scene. Blaine picked it open. They'd search the place themselves before going to the precinct to see if there was any evidence they could use which had been brought in.

Immediately Min began looking around, her eyes scanning every surface closely. Blaine watched her for a second, before forcing himself to snap out of it. He pulled an EMF meter from his jacket pocket. He ran it across the room, but picked up nothing. No ghost then. There was no point checking the other rooms: both victims were known to have vanished from the living area.

Eventually, he shook his head and put the meter away. He joined Min in just looking around. She hadn't found anything though. No traces, no clues. Walking over to one of the windows, he paused.... there was something these....
Are those claw marks? she asked.

I'm not sure, he replied. They were faint. Could be just scratch marks....
Still a struggle, though, she noted. I'm gonna go look outside.
She left the room, going outside, while he continued to peruse.

Re: World 6: Awakened - RP Thread
He scanned the entire room, but wasn't finding anything. He was just about to give up on it, when something caught his eye. It'd been half-hidden beneath one of the sofas before. He knelt down beside it, shining a torch to better illuminate the shadowed dark spot. Gingerly he tapped his finger at it. It looked like ectoplasm, but that didn't make any sense, with no EMF earlier. And it didn't have the same gooey texture either.
