Eventually she gave up on an answer, and rushed past Avril downstairs going to look herself. Once she was in the lower floors she could pick up a faint unfamilar scent, and she followed that to the room where the man had been laid. She rushed inside, stopping at his side. She recognised him at once.

She sighed, shaking her head. They'd probably never find out, then. Lyle wasn't likely to remember, and it was too late for Ryan. A pulse of pain ran through her at that thought, causing her breathing to hitch. She'd thought she'd hated him..... but now.... she just couldn't believe he was gone.

She got to her feet slowly, and walked outside and into the next room. She pushed the door open gently as she entered. A sob shook her body as she saw him lying there, dead, having died to protect Lyle, to protect her. That was the real reason. He'd died because anything else would have hurt her. Or rather, anything else would have hurt her more.

Avril smiled, and nodded, slightly She's been.. vague, but we'd know if she was hurt - she said she would come home to visit in a bit.. I think she's enjoying the freedom, really.

Charlotte raised one hand to wipe her eyes, shaking her head against the ache which was now within her. She'd have never thought it'd hurt so much. But then, she'd never pictured this...... she hadn't realised the danger their connection placed Ryan in. She'd have never thought he'd give up so much just to protect her. And she couldn't even thank him.

No. That wasn't true. He wouldn't be able to hear her, but she could still say her thanks, and her goodbye, and in fact she felt she had to. Fresh tears sprang again from her eyes, but this time she didn't bothering wiping them away, as she stepped closer to his battered body. She took hold of his nearest hand, and squeezed it gently.
Thank you, Ryan, she whispered. Thank you.... so much. And I'm sorry. I didn't understand..... but I do now. I see now, what you were to me. So thank you. You saved me. And my son or daughter thanks you too, for not letting him or her live without a father.
