As it lunged once more, he yet again threw himself away, backing away desperately. He dimly recognised that he'd made the same mistake as before. Rushing in, without thinking. That was why he'd gotten almost killed before. He could see these things, but he didn't know how to kill them, or even harm them. These knife slashes he was creating did draw blood, but they were obviously not slowing the monster down. It was as if they did nothing more than hurt it.

This fight - more of a farce of a fight, really - had by now turned into him backing away, dodging again and again, as the creature attacked him, lookin around desperately for whatever could hurt it, what he didn't know. He already knew he wouldn't flee. He didn't know why. There wasn't any point in him dying here, but he just knew, he wouldn't do as before. He couldn't. It didn't make any sense, but still. Once again, the creature lunged at him, once again he barely dodged. It fell to the ground where he'd been previously, overthrown by the force of its own movement. It'd done that before. Before, it'd gotten up in seconds, attempted again. This time, it didn't. He could only stare in shock.

He just stared. That was all he could do. The monster was suddenly still, unmoving, eyes blank.... obviously dead. What had happened? What had been different, this time? Slowly, cautiously, he approached it, and saw that a rusty iron spike was poking through its back. It must have fallen on the piece of litter, lying idly on the street, as he'd dodged. And somehow that spike had killed it.

Hesitantly he touched the creature, but it remained still, a corpse. He pulled it off the spike, and it still didn't move. There must have been something in it which had worked. A weakness for the metal, maybe? He realised again just how little he knew of all of this, how ignorant he was. He had to learn all of it, somehow. He needed it, if he was going to continue, and he knew he would. He'd need it if he wanted to stay alive. Shrugging, he pushed those thoughts aside for the moment, and returned home.

Anya hadn't heard from Blaine in a couple of days, and she was beginning to wonder. She began thinking of checking up on him, then realised that she didn't know where the apartment he was renting was. He'd never told her. She considered checking the training warehouse, and even though she doubted he'd be there, she went to look anyway.
She let herself in using the key he'd given her, and began looking. No sign of Blaine. Before she left, however, the phone in one of the more office-looking rooms began ringing. She hesitated, then told herself that she should answer.

Hello? she began, slightly uncertainly. She wasn't sure who'd be calling this place.
Who is this? came the sharp, instant reply. This should be Blaine Haleson.
This is Anya.... Anya Haleson, she answered, changing her mind halfway and deciding to give her biological family name. She doubted the man would recognise the name Emmanuel. I'm Blaine's sister. Can I help you?
There was a short silence, as the man on the other end considered whether or not to continue.

A few minutes later, she heard the door opening and footsteps in the hallway. She poked her head through and saw her brother entering.

Probably one of Dad's contacts. He gave almost everyone this number, said that we'd be hunting in San Francisco for a while. I've worked with a lot of them in the past.

Are we hunting to kill? she asked. She suspected as much. Feral and driven by their own adrenaline didn't make it sound as if these creatures could be rationalised with.
Blaine nodded.

She followed him out to the car, dumping her bag with the majority of the weapons in the back seat. She had one silver-bulleted gun at her waist and one silver knife up her right sleeve. Blaine drove, and they soon arrived at the location. He parked and they got out silently. These lycanthropes were said to have good hearing, but they were still trying to have as much of the advantage of surprise as possible.

Blaine shrugged the weapons bag over his shoulder, while Anya tensed her grip on her knife. Silently they approached the doorway. It was closed, but the wood looked weak even from here. She altered reality to ensure that it'd break easily, just in case. Blaine kicked it, and it fell down instantly. In the next second, the barrels of their matching guns were sticking through the entrance, blasting silver bullets.

Anya was firing madly, barely taking time to look and see what she was aiming at. She was trying to manipulate reality to increase the odds of them hitting, but she wasn't sure if it was working. The inside was just so dark. Suddenly, a hand shot out, grasping her wrist in an iron grip. She was torn inside before she could think. She yanked her arm away, but she'd lost her gun, and it was kicked away before she could recover. She instead moved the knife to her right hand, using it to deflect away the lycanthropes as they snapped and leapt at her.

Blaine had raced into the warehouse as soon as he'd seen his sister captured. He spared a second to check her whereabouts, ensure that he wouldn't accidentally hit her, then began firing again. He also registered that they'd been misinformed about the size of this hunt. There were far more than two or three lycanthropes here. The room, vast as it was, was still filled with the creatures. That didn't matter though - they were here, they'd fight and hunt, not run.

He'd shot two of the creatures when a third charged into him, sending him flying. Reflexively he curled and threw himself away from it as he landed. He had to keep himself away from those claws, those jaws. He raised the gun, fired another shot. A silver bullet direct to its heart. One attempted to crawl up behind him, making far too much ruccus to be successful, and he turned and slashed a dagger across its throat. Across the room, Anya was still using her knife to fence against the one which had drawn her inside in the first place. She'd injured it, but despite the burn of silver its adrenaline fueled frenzy was keeping it going. She could barely keep it off herself.

She threw the knife against it once again, pushing it backwards. It hissed in pain as the silver blade contacted. That pain never seemed to keep it back, though. Too insanely driven to even think of self-preservation. Again she stabbed outwards, drawing some blood, cutting into its torso. It was slowing by now. Slowing slightly. She tried to make her way towards her gun, to retrieve it, but a second lycanthrope attacked, driving her backwards. Luckily, it'd managed to get in the way of the first. Blaine shot that one in the back and took the opportunity to grab a spare gun, hurl it at her. She caught, aimed, fired.

Barely pausing to think, she looked for the next nearest lycanthrope, and fired again. Again, and again. She tried to move so quickly that they wouldn't have time to react, to attack, since it seemed that close quarter fighting wasn't her strong point. Blaine was currently in the fray against three others, slashing with 2 daggers as his gun was tucked into his jeans pocket. They were thinning, slowly. The lycanthropes' frenzy made them hard to actually fight, but it did block them from thinking logically and strategically too.

That advantage was beginning to show. The pair of them kept firing mechanically, slashing their knives at any creatures which came close enough, keeping their defences high, and slowly the lycanthropes' numbers were thinning. Eventually, as the one Anya was fighting dropped dead with a knife to the heart, she noticed that no new one was stepping up to replace it. Heart pounding, she looked around. There was no more motion. Only her brother standing there, struggling for breath as she was. Slowly she smiled at him. Another hunt finished...... then her heart caught, and her smile faltered.
Something new had captured her eyes. Slowly they were dragged downwards from Blaine's face. A glance of crimson....

She stared, horrified, at the deep claw marks scoring his left shoulder and upper arm. The words he'd spoken earlier echoed in her mind. He'd explained lycanthropes to her. The same method of infection.... using bites.... and scratches......

I didn't even feel it, he said hoarsely.
Maybe that means it didn't work, she offered, searching for a hope to cling too. Maybe it wasn't deep enough, and the infection didn't take....

Adrenaline. The word was like a drip on her mind. She'd remembered something else Blaine had mentioned. Lycanthropes weren't controlled by the moon's phases, it was adrenaline which turned them from humans.
Can anything be done? she whispered.

He said that he'd heard of some possible options.... three of them. Only options though, there's nothing certain. Rumours and theories, really.... the first is killing the infector....

Well, he said something else too, she continued. She hadn't really expected the first one to work - their dad had described it as a complete myth. It's this potion we'll have to make.... some of the ingredients will be a pain to source, though. Or most of them.

He didn't say what it was because he was already vetoing it, Blaine countered. And I agree with him. I don't need to know what it is, he's always right about this stuff. It's probably some disturbing dark witch ritual, with something sick like drinking a newborn's blood in it....
