The next day, James got a flight back to Boston, where he waited afterwards at the airport for his sons and ex-wife to arrive from Seattle, where they now lived. Jo'd claimed that she hoped he'd be able to get some sense from them, since she couldn't. He already suspected that he knew what was going on.

Minutes later, he was laughing as Craig, his youngest, ran over and barreled into him. He picked the boy up, swinging him around and pretending to struggle to do so. Craig was laughing insanely.

Hi Daddy!! he grinned, his brother echoing the greeting much more calmly. As usual, Jo was practically ignoring him. It'd been her strategy since the divorce.

As he'd suspected, he was seeing those strange-yet-familar blurred veils around both of his sons, 2 for Craig and 3 for Adam. 5 abilities. He couldn't work out what they were, however. Craig was still babbling on excitedly, his 6 year old's voice rising ever higher in pitch, but Adam was strangely quiet and edgy.
