Again, Anya's hesitation was noticeable before she answered. Her tone was slow, reluctant.

It isn't working. At all. I can't make myself know, or make myself realise where to look for the information... I can't even make myself realise what's blocking it!

She saw Min looking at her, questioning, worried. The same worry, she knew, was reflected in her own eyes. What had happened to her? How had she lost her power, her capacity to twist reality? Blaine suddenly leapt to his feet, and she was so startled by that, it made her jump. She just watched as he raced to one of the nearest shelves, began searching through the books there, muttering inaudibly beneath his breath. She didn't dare question him, ask what he was searching for.

Finally he turned around. He was now holding a slightly battered looking volume in both hands. He placed it down on the table. Anya could now see his face, and she was surprised by the conflict on it. Fear, anxiety, worry; yes, as she'd expected - but also some sort of hope, barely there.

What is it? she asked.

I think I might know what's happening, what's doing this to you.

He opened the book and began skimming through pages rapidly til he paused on one. His expression changed. Anya couldn't help thinking it was the hopeful aspect which vanished.

She didn't say anything about that, however. She was too unsure. Instead, she looked down at the page he'd opened, wordlessly reading the entry.

That explains the power blocking, she nodded. The information in the book stated that some had this capability. It also reassured her that the effects were temporary, that they'd fade once they killed the creature or even just after enough time had passed since it stopped targeting her.

It must have learned that we were in the city, and began blocking just in case, Blaine agreed.

We still need to find it though... near where the body was found and the second guy went missing? It does say they're territorial...

That's the best idea, he confirmed. There was nothing in the book about the creature's vulnerabilities, so they armed themselves with as many different types of weapons they could carry. Hopefully at least one of those would have an effect. They climbed into Min's car - the nearest - and drove to the alley where the dead body had been discovered.

They'd nearly arrived when Blaine's cell phone began ringing. He answered it, slightly distracted, and Anya watched him grimace as he spoke. He just said that he'd deal with it, and hung up.

Another case? she asked, guessing. He nodded.

Go on it, Min and I can deal with this one.

For a second, Blaine looked like he was about to argue.

I've already dealt with one case alone, she pointed out. And besides, you've already said that you'll help with whatever it is. I can tell.

He nodded.

I wasn't going to argue, he replied. It's just.... you've never fought blocked before, have you?

Min laughed.

Don't worry. I can look after both of us. If she can't.

Anya turned around to face Min, her expression furious. A claim that she could look after herself was poised on her lips. Then she remembered how Min had ended her words, and caught the joke. She saw now that there was still laughter on Min's face.

See, Blaine? We're both fine. What is this new hunt of yours, anyway?

She noticed his hesitation. It made her worry. Why would he be reluctant to tell them? Was it especially dangerous?

James Mason?

She didn't recognise the name.

He's another hunter, an old contact of Dad's. He's the guy.... he was the one who I was gonna ask to... help me, before. When I was going to ask you but then changed my mind.

Anya shuddered. She knew exactly what he was referring to, without any need to question or even think about it much. It wouldn't have been helping. James Mason was the man Blaine would have asked to kill him if he'd truly transformed into a lycanthrope.

The silence which followed that explanation was awkward. Even Min, who didn't know, picked something up from Anya's shuddering reaction and didn't say anything. After a moment, Blaine just climbed out of the car.

For a moment, Anya just watched her brother's retreating figure. She did so until he'd rounded a corner and had vanished from her view. Then, with a start, she shook herself out of her stupor. She couldn't waste time worrying over him. She and Min had a case to finish, a monster to fight and kill. She glanced over at the other woman for a second, saw her nodding and tensing her grip on her concealed knives. Anya raised her hand and hammered on the door.

There was no answer. The wood shivered under her hand. She hammered again, harder, til it split and she shoved the remainders aside. She climbed through, Min following. It didn't take long for their trespass to be discovered. They'd anticipated this - the book had emphasised the Mesati's territorial nature, warned of it. Within seconds she was being attacked. A blurring figure threw itself into her from the side, and all she could see were the needle fangs.

Anya shoved away awkwardly, and managed to keep those fangs out of her face. The creature was heavy, despite its deceptive appearance as a slim young woman. The only sign of non-humanness were those teeth. Anya moved her hand to her pocket and pulled out the nearest of the knives she'd placed there, slashed out. The Mesati cried out in pain. It flew off her, but only temporarily. As it dove at her again, she could see that her blade had only hurt it, not injured.

She fought down her dismay at that. She told herself that they'd expected this, that was why they'd brought such a variety of weapons here. The failed blade fell to the floor as she released it, and she moved to pull out another. But that one too made no real impact.

She told herself not to read anything into that, as she threw the second knife aside. It was hard not to, though. What if none of their weapons worked? What if this thing needed a specially forged weapon, or even if nothing in existence could touch it? Was that even possible? The book hadn't said so - but the book hadn't said anything about killing it at all, and maybe this could be why. She tried telling herself these thoughts were paranoia. But that didn't remove them.

She kept slashing outwards, discarding useless blade after useless blade. It was only because she could do nothing else. It was taking all of her strength, all of the limited skill Blaine had managed to pass on to her in so short a time, to keep the Mesati's poisoned fangs away from her, out of her skin. She knew she'd die if she failed there. She knew those teeth held a poison which'd make her bleed to death. The focus needed to protect herself, and her usual pure dependency on her lost ability, made it impossible for her to try to think up a new strategy here.

Anya had lost all thought of Min's presence beside her. When the creature had initially barraged into them both, Min had dived aside, rolling sideways until she'd come to a stop beside the wall. She'd then leapt back to her feet and began slashing at its back with her own knives. She saw Anya's failures, the discarded blades. Her own attempts were working as well.

She kept on with her fruitless attack attempts though - they both did. Finally, Min had only one blade left to use. She handled it tightly, glancing down at it, seeing the light from the window gleaming briefly off the metal. One last attempt left. Only one try. This better work, she thought to herself. It better work, because after that she didn't know what else they could do. She took a step forwards. At the same time, the same second, she saw the Mesati lashing out at Anya, pinned beneath it, again. Min's vision seemed to accelerate, and she saw that Anya would fail this time to block it in time. It was almost as if she could see the fangs sinking into her skin before it happened. She threw herself forwards. Desperately, she just tried to get there in time, just interfere, do something, even if she didn't even know if the blade would work or fail as all others had done.

Anya had seen the creature's coming attack. She'd lifted her hands in an attempt to block it; she hadn't known that she was moving too late. She stumbled backwards, and found it collapsing with her. They fell to the floor. For a second, she was sure she could feel the sharp snap of teeth in her flesh, then she realised that she was imagining the pain, and that even though she could feel blood on her skin she wasn't injured. The blood wasn't hers.

With an effort, she shoved the Mesati's body away from herself. Then she pulled herself back to her feet. She noticed the gleaming handle of a blade sticking out of the creature's back, deep enough to have penetrated the spine. She bent down to pull it out.

Yours? she asked Min, handing it over to the other woman. Thanks.

Min just grinned.

It hadn't taken Blaine long to arrive at the address James Mason had given him. His anxiety, both over the case and over Anya and Min, had led him to pace there. As a result, he had to wait for the older man. He went over the short amount of details he'd been given during the phone call as he waited.

Those details had been few. For some reason, Mason was paranoid and wouldn't discuss much of any case over the phone. He hadn't for all the years Blaine had known him. As a result, when the older man did arrive, the first thing Blaine did was ask what the case really was.

I have a suspicion, the man admitted, his voice gruff. Blaine had suspected that he would have an idea.

What do you know of Epotum? he continued.

Drainers? Blaine replied, startled. I'd learned that they were self-governing.

They say they are, Mason nodded. Bloody parasites. There's a rogue here in the city.

Blaine didn't voice his questions, but that didn't stop them from being asked in his head. Even with a rogue, they were still self-governing. Or they should be. He'd been taught by his father that all drainers were left to other drainers to deal with. He didn't bother arguing the point though.

Where is it? he asked.

All I know is where the victim was found - which is in that building, he pointed.
