Yeah I'm pretty.. well it's been a good day, she replied finally. A long day. It was only really hitting her now how tired she was and when her thoughts turned to bed, that's when she remembered the school. I - Oh my God, I need to get back to the school.

A few days had passed since the fight, and Perry had seen no further sign of Fia. She hadn't come back to the school. She hadn't left her apartment. He'd asked Helios, who'd said that he hadn't seen or heard from his sister either. Perry had to leave pretty quickly then, before the boy started wondering why he was asking.

At first, he'd decided to give her some space. She needed it, after all. Nearly dying probably made people require space, he decided. After a few more days though, he headed over to her home, just to check. he rang the doorbell, but she just ignored it. He could tell she was in - he could hear her. But she didn't answer.

Dani was right, as much as he had missed his family, as great as it was to see his cousins, it felt strange being back, he missed the school. When the group were getting ready to leave the next day, he joined them, smiling cheerfully at everyone.

He began walking back the short distance to the school grounds. He couldn't help but be disappointed. Questions kept echoing round in his mind, despite all his efforts to ignore and bury them. Why was she reacting like this? Avoiding him? Was she regretting what she'd done? Regretting the decision to kiss him? What had that been? He'd assumed at the time that it meant she liked him as he liked her, but now he was realising that it was an assumption. Maybe she'd just wanted to give him that lie if she'd die and he'd never see her again.

That idea was strikingly painful. Much more painful than he'd thought it'd be, before he considered it. He'd never believed before that he'd stand a chance of her feeling the same way. He knew he was probably too young for her, and besides, the walls she kept up between her and the rest of the world.... but now, he'd believed the lie. Only for a little while, a few hours. It felt like a second. But he'd believed it.

Over the passing weeks, that new idea started to become poison. He couldn't stop thinking of it. Fia remained absent, and after that first attempt Perry didn't try to bother her again. He decided, uncharacteristically harshly, to give her the solitude she wanted. Even though he suspected it wasn't what she needed. Being with her wasn't what he needed, after all.

A month passed before she did return. In the interval, the truth about the fight had emerged, but Perry hadn't paid any attention to all of the talk about it. Half of his classmates seemed terrified at the idea, and the other half kept complaining that they hadn't been involved. He just ignored it all. It didn't matter. Fia mattered. And he didn't have a clue how to reach out to her, what to do to help her, and there was a little hurt voice in the back of his head born of bitterness which was muttering that he should leave her to rot.

When Fia hesitantly entered the school grounds, she found they were busier than she remembered. Students were flocking around all over the place. She wondered briefly where they'd all come from, but told herself that she must have just forgotten what it was like here. She headed upstairs, to one of the Heads' offices. A few minutes of discussion and her request was agreed to. Then she drifted back downstairs.

She wandered around almost idly through the crowd. Briefly, she considered going to look for Perry, just out of habit. Then she remembered and told herself that she couldn't do that. She couldn't go talk to her brother either, because she knew Perry might be looking for her there. She kept on walking. She found herself passing the spot where she'd saved Perry before, recognisable to her even though the damage had been repaired by now, and she shuddered. She walked on.

After a few more minutes, she spotted a low brick wall and headed over to it, then sat down on it to think for a while. The place did seem busier than before, she thought again. It was milling with students. And she couldn't see a single face she'd passed before. She was beginning to become tempted to ask someone, when one of the students walked over and sat beside her.

The girl was a year or two younger than her, she guessed. She was almost fragile looking, pale and slim. At first, she was looking downwards, then she glanced at Fia, and Fia gasped.

It's all right if I sit here, right? she asked. Fia barely noticed the twang of an American accent. She was too busy fighting the urge to ask about those strange, glowing red eyes.

No, there are a few of us transferred. Our old school closed. My brother - well, stepbrother really - Nate - I was with him earlier, but I've lost him.

Fia smiled at the mention of a brother. She briefly considered speaking of her own, of how she'd first come here to look after him, but her old reluctance held her back.

Do you want help looking for him? she offered instead. Callie shrugged, then nodded. Fia leapt to her feet, landing lightly off the wall, and Callie followed her. She jumped a bit too strongly, making her nearly crash into Fia, if Fia hadn't hurriedly backed away.

What is it? she asked, perplexed. She'd noticed the look of panic, almost fear, which'd crossed the girl's face for a second as she moved away. It'd been far too irrational for the mere idea of them colliding.

It isn't anything you did. It's me. I... people can't touch me. I get hurt when they do. It's one of my powers.
