The walk to the library was a long one and then it was another five minutes until he managed to find the right table. He received a warm smile from Dani and she stood up to hug him. Is that it? she asked, her eyes almost glowing when she saw the sword still in his left hand.

Yeah.. but Dani - I need to talk to you, he said, nervously.

Why? What is it? Where are Greg and Lily?

He sighed, painfully. I.. something happened. Greg's.. not well.

What's happened to him? Daniel asked softly, though he believed that he could already guess.

Dani could already feel tears of worry in her eyes before Mark finally said it. His Ainsprid attacked - he.. got a piece of glass straight through the chest. He's at the hospital now, but I don't - don't think he'll..

No, whispered Dani, barely audibly. Her single word of denial. It was impossible. She was dying, not Greg - Greg was fine. He shouldn't be hurt, she should die. He should live. Did he drink any of the blood?

Mark managed a smile in an attempt to cheer her up. Yes. But I killed it. The blood didn't work.

Dani nodded, accepting the information before she began walking towards the exit. Everyone followed, Kylian taking the lead as he lead them towards the hospital. Dani was too blinded by her tears to clearly see the path she followed, gnawing her fingernails as they walked.

If he didn't drink the blood, he ought to be saveable, right? Daniel whispered to Dani as they walked to the hospital, trying to reassure her.

Yeah, managed Dani, but she was barely able to cling to the hope. They entered the hospital and a nurse asked two questions "Who are you?" and "Who are you here to see?" When she informed them that they were not able to visit Greg right then, Dani barged past her. Kylian stopped the nurse from following with a simple glare and a silent warning.

She followed the signs to the unit marked Intensive Care and finally she saw Lily. She was crouched over the bed, holding on Greg's hand, silently commanding him to get better, to heal. On the floor by the bed was a scrunched up piece of paper that when Mark opened revealed a failed drawing of Greg smiling in the bed with a bandage around him.

Lily stepped back when she saw Dani, not even greeting her friend as Dani dropped down on her knees, clutching Greg's hand. Please step away from the patient, said one of the doctors calmly and Dani obeyed, although every part of her wanted to shout and scream and demand that she was allowed to hold his hand.

She couldn't hold back tears as she saw the doctors do what they could - they removed the glass and sterilised the wound, they pumped him full of a drug she couldn't name and shouted at nurses to prepare for surgery. However, they had barely even finished hooking up all the machines when one doctor spoke a word in a language only Kylian could comprehend.

Lost.

What, what does that mean?! spluttered Dani through the mess of tears running down her face. She saw the doctors backing away from her brother and although she didn't want to, she understood.

Kylian spoke softly. They don't think they can save him.

NO! shouted Dani, loudly. Heads turned around the room, but she didn't care. NO! He's saveable. He can be saved! Make them save him! MAKE THEM!

Sky, she's a healer, he muttered, though he was barely aware of the fact that he'd even spoken. He didn't wait for any response or reaction. Already, he was phoning his brother, explaining succinctly what had happened and asking the pair to travel here.

I'll go, said Dani after a few minutes. They won't get here in time otherwise.

She looked down at her brother's beaten and bruised body on the white hospital sheets and swallowed another sob. Dani leant down a kissed him on the forehead, but she didn't say goodbye. Because she couldn't - this wasn't a goodbye, this was a "I'll see you when you wake up". Never goodbye.

Make the doctors keep him alive, she ordered, before she closed her eyes and in a blue flash of light, she disappeared. When she arrived, she stood outside a huge house in the middle of somewhere she didn't know. She approached the house, praying it was Sky and Nick's - knowing that if it wasn't, she wouldn't have a brother to save.

Mere moments before the blue flash of light, Greg opened his eyes, seeing his sister for a single moment before she disappeared. Lily was the first to notice, smoothing his hair out for him and trying to cool him down. Dani's just coming, she said, soothingly. Dani'll be right back with Sky and she'll heal you.

Haha, Greg managed, even now. It wasn't put on, there was true laughter in his eyes. He looked up at the ceiling, trying to imagine his sister arriving in time. Whether they knew it or not, he definitely did. One long breathe and then he spoke. Tell Dani.. it's not over. He wheezed and coughed a little before he finished. Yet.

His final smile still hadn't fallen from his lips when the monitor beeped and his eyes slid closed.

A blue flash of light appeared mere seconds later.

Immediately, Sky rushed over to his side, placed a hand on his arm and focused on trying to force the healing to work. For several minutes, she was completely still, and it was all she thought of. However, she eventually shook her head.

It's too late, she whispered. I'm sorry.

No, whispered Dani. She moved closer to the bed, taking his hand, but she could feel there was no movement already - the body felt cold, but that probably her. It was unimaginable. Something she never would have thought could happen had. Please don't be true.[/color]

Lily laid a hand on her shoulder and Dani reacted by hugging her friend. Dani.. he said.. He said to tell you that "It's not over yet".

I should have been here, was Dani's reaction - she didn't bother to listen to the words at first, only the fact that he had been conscious, been alive.. and she had been miles away.

You couldn't have been here, Mark stated. But Dani - you're not thinking about this. He.. He wasn't poisoned. His Ainsprid is dead. Greg's alive, somewhere.

She nodded. She understood that. It was true. Somewhere. But not here, Dani replied. She tried to hold back a few tears, but it didn't work and she was soon sobbing into Lily's shoulder.

We need to get back to work, Kylian stated. Most would have considered it insensitive, but even Dani agreed with him - she wanted to. Work meant she didn't have to think about her dead brother or how she had let him down.

What do you mean, he's alive somewhere? Sky asked softly. She hadn't been able to identify his abilities, the small amount of time she'd had being too little for her to get past the block that was the fact that he wasn't Atari. She didn't know how he could resurrect himself.

He can reincarnate, explained Lily. Greg's probably being born right now. And we can go.. we can find him.

(He gets reincarnated as a newborn not a foetus? Now I'm wondering what happens to the person that baby would have been if he hadn't died)

How would you do that? Daniel asked, trying to hide his shock at the cavalier revelation.

Hang on, don't you need to deal with Dani's Ainsprid, first?

I meant afterwards, replied Lily. Dani didn't say anything. She watched as Kylian walked away, speaking a few low words to one of the male nurses, who then pressed a few buttons, presumably to summon someone to take him to the morgue. And I have no idea how we'll find him. But we will. We can.

She shot Daniel a menacing look to stop questioning the "finding him" part of her new plan. We're going to need to find some way to make sure Dani's safe first. Should we go back to the library?

Lily agreed and left with Mark for the library. Kylian followed after them, but Dani stopped to talk to Sky. She wiped tears from her face before she opened her mouth, and even then her words sounded a bit rusty. Would you like me to take you home?

Thank you, replied Dani, but she secretly wondered if she'd prefer it if they left - it would mean fewer people risking their lives for her. Trying to save her for no reason other than stupidity.

I know, she admitted - of course they could. But so could Greg. So why was he lying on that bed, dead, when he should be here, making smart ass comments and telling them they didn't have time to mourn.

You'll get him back, she whispered, though she couldn't quite keep a hint of bitterness and old grief from the words. She wasn't as lucky. Her relatives wouldn't ever be reborn.
